What’s an appropriate tip for a valet?

I’m staying in a hotel in downtown Houston this week. I’m OT poor and uncultured. If I’m picking up my truck in the mornings what do I give these guys?

Ah-ha! A topic where i can finally advise you laypersons. Unfortunately i usually just hand a wad of cash to the fellow so i can’t give you an exact figure.

Sounds reasonable. Also I know these guys rely heavily on tips, but there must be some kind of base. It’s 48 bucks a day for this shite.

I keep $2s on me for this.
I throw them a couple deuces. Maybe more if it’s a nicer place or if I chose to valet.

When I was a kid my family was too poor to go to The Village restaurant in BR, but whenever we drove by I was always impressed by the fact that they had valet parking.

I give $5 per guy if one takes your car and another brings one of those hotel carts to load up my rolling cooler and rented tuxedo and what not

As someone who used to do it, what a valet will really appreciate is if you tip on the way in when you are dropping your car off. Many guests would only tip on the way out.
The thing is, say you work a Friday Night shift, on Friday Nights you are going to spend most of your time parking cars. But since most people don't tip when dropping the car off, you'd work hard and not make much money. The most in demand shifts when I worked at hotels were always Sunday Mornings, since pretty much 100% of what you were doing was retrieving cars, which is when most people actually tip.
$3 on the way in $3 on the way out is fine.

When I worked at the Westin at the Dallas Galleria I would make bank even though our base pay was $3.58 an hour. We'd be disappointed if we didn't make $200 for the shift. Some nights we'd clear $400. NBA All Star Weekend we made $1000 each on both Friday and Saturday. Usually what determined a really good night was having high rollers with fancy cars who'd give us big tips for leaving their cars out front. Kevin Durant came in one night in his Rolls Royce and gave us $500 and since only 3 of us were working that night it was $167 a piece and we didn't even touch his car. $500 just to let him park it in the drive.
I also worked at the Gaylord and it was worse because while there were a lot more guests, we'd also have to staff a lot more people to handle it, meaning more people to split the tip pool with. Most times we'd have too many people and how good of a night we would have would depend on how many valets would voluntarily go home for the night. Average night there probably $100-125 for an 8 hour shift. If you got scheduled at the Glass Cactus night club you could make more.

If at all possible, I self-park, otherwise you have to get the valet to retrieve your car every time you need to access it (ie. to get cell phone charger, sunglasses,etc.).. But to answer your question, I tip $5 for retrieving my car and a couple of bucks per bag if someone brings bags to my room.

I always tip the valet more when dropping off the car. I’m my mind I think they will take better care of my car while parking it
Usually $10 dropping off and then a $5 when picking up.
When it’s Christmas time I drop a hundred on them every so often.

How would you know the people you worked with weren’t stealing tips if you were pooling tips with other valet’s?
