I’m no Lincoln lover, but his assassination was the most detrimental thing that could’ve possibly happened to the South after the Civil War.
Lincoln’s successor, Andrew Johnson, a former Democrat and Southern Unionist, was a buffoon who lacked all political acumen needed for that pivotal time. He pissed off the Republican majority Congress with his leniency and they fired back by instituting “Radical Reconstruction, which ultimately set the South back a century economically.

The greatest thing to happen to present day black Americans is chattel slavery. It's not even up for debate. Compare standards of living in sub-Saharan Africa today with the same standard of living in the United States. I know the moderates on here will get a case of the Aunt Pittypat vapors just contemplating the idea, but it is undeniably true.

i file this under the same category as "women only have rights because men allow them to have rights". it's a pretty unpleasant truth, but it's impossible to defeat in an argument.

Care to counter that argument? Or is your case of the Aunt Pittypat vapors not over yet?

Explain in great detail how an institution that end over 160 years ago affects anyone today. Then, counter the statement that black Americans would be better off today in sub-Saharan Africa than in the United States.

Whether the authors intention was to negate the horrors of the atlantic slave trade/chattel slavery or not, the result is that they did. It's like saying the best thing to happen to Jews is the holocaust because they now have the state of Israel. It's insensitive at best and racist at worst.

That's my real issue. I could get into the depths of the logic of the statement which i also disagree with but I'm not super interested in an internet argument where neither of us will change each other's minds.

lol so you did the exact thing i said you would, which is make an emotional statement while making no actual argument against it because you're "not super interested"

Really? The straight lines dividing Mississippi from Alabama or the Florida panhandle from Georgia are geographical? Don’t get me started about Tennessee’s northern and southern borders or Pennsylvania’s nonsense box.

Not emotional.

you might not be emotional but when you say things like "it's racist and insensitive" and make comparisons to the holocaust, etc etc, you are giving an emotion based response to the argument instead of arguing against the actual thing.

is it insensitive to say things like he said? sure, i guess. but being insensitive doesnt make it wrong.

what is your argument that the descendants of black slaves would be better off in subsaharan africa today? it doesnt take away from acknowledging an evil institution to point out that the victims of it have ended up in a better position 150 years later because of it. your comparisoin to the Jews and the State of Israel is a perfect example that you made yourself. does it mean we should celebrate slavery or the holocaust? of course not. but that doesnt preclude us from pointing out positive outcomes of evil events.

I failed to know how Germany lost that war. US intervention into the war made the difference. The Kaiser would not have been defeated if the US Army had never set foot on the Western Front in France.

The Germans had just knocked out the Russians and were on the verge to overrun the allies in the West. However, the British blockade was completely strangling the German economy and people were running out of food. The Germans really only had the patience for one more mass assault. The Americans arrived just in time with tons of supplies to aid the allies in France, and the German offensive failed. The German navy mutinied, and the people were rioting in need of food, so the armistice was signed.

However, the peace conference was an absolute farce. The bloodthirsty French wanted everything, and Wilson was an idiot who had a completely fanciful view of the world and its future. The agreement that was reached served no one but the British.

It just comes across as a white savior thing. "hey we enslaved you but at least we got you out of africa." Which paints america as good and africa as bad. While I agree that objectively America is better (generally speaking. I'm sure there may be some things that are good in Africa) but the reason Africa is in the shape it is now is because of European nations who carved it up willy nilly through colonialism and screwed it up for the past 300 years.

So europeans and americans screwed them over, screwed up their continent, but then in this argument we say good thing we enslaved your ancestors because now you live in a country with a higher GDP because we screwed up the continent you would have been on had we not done all that.

Theres just so much more to it than saying "it's the best thing that ever happened to you..."

I do not know enough about the nuances of all the countries and all the people of sub-saharan Africa to intelligently answer the question in depth. I think 99/100 people would say the majority of americans in general are better off than the majority of africans. I still don't believe you can then take the leap to say that means chattel slavery was the best thing to happen to those people. Look i understand how he's making the argument, it's not devoid of arithmetic but it's a pretty simplistic assumption of much more complex topics.

it definitely wasnt the best thing to happen to the slaves and no one is saying that. but the positive impacts on their descendants - namely, the fact that they live in America - is undeniable and overwhelmingly higher than the negative impacts on their descendants - nebulous, immeasurable things like "white privilege" and "institutional racism" and whatever else they claim as lasting impacts of slavery.

it doesnt make you a racist to acknowledge that. and i agree with you that it's probably an oversimplification of a complex issue, but the evidence is still so overwhelming that the argument against it is almost pointless - that is, arguing that blacks in America today are in a worse positioin than they would have been

if anything it's a testament to them and their more recent ancestors ability to overcome a historic injustice.

Well, let's see. The creeks in North Alabama attacked white people but the ones is South Alabama were "mostly peaceful" and only helped the Northern Creeks once or twice because they felt they had to....

Sounds kind of like the Middle East....
