You left out the grocery stores and drug stores that want to see your keychain tag to identify you as a club member to possibly get discounts.
I just left Walgreens. They insisted on some membership ID.
I told them I was there because I was sick and about to throw up.
They decided they did not want to clean up my vomit.

As a former GameStop employee, trust me when I say most people hate asking that stuff as much as you hate answering it.

Yes....this!
I'm a store manager and I assure you we do not want to have to ask these questions but some of the responses we get from customers is unnecessary. To me it's a simple yes or no.
There are certain percentages of sales that have to be associated with a card, you're forced to ask if you need a complementary item with your first purchase, etc. Its ridiculous the amount of questions that have to be asked to customers who simply don't want to be bothered. Hence, I don't make my staff force all of the information on customers that they want and it creates a better experience. We still perform well and we are able to meet sales but not have to bombard everyone with twenty questions. Instead, we focus on specific questions that can help the customer that are within the guidelines and not ALL of the questions. You'd be surprised how many questions they want to ask if someone is buying just one item.
Sorry for my long post. Just wanted to chime in and say that we hate it just as much as the customers do.

These answers give great looks, but they're totally valid.

I went to Grainger a few years ago and refused to ever go back again bc of this. Our shop was literally 4 buildings down from them and I needed a gallon of motor oil. Went in, grabbed the oil, and went to the counter to pay with cash. The guy wanted to create an account for me. I said no thanks, I just want to pay with cash. Then he see's my company logo so he decides to look in their system and see's that we have accounts from other locations around the US. When he starts explaining this to me, I once again told him dont worry about that, I just want to pay with cash so I can go. He was then having trouble with selecting which location to use and I just went off. I saw another guy there and told him that if they didnt take my 20 dollars and ring me up I was leaving. Finally they just rang me up.
How fricking hard is it to ting someone up? Its extremely sad when you have a customer TRYING to give you money and you wont accept it! Needless to say I finally got my oil but my customer was pissed bc it took alot longer to get there than it should have.

When it's a female employee and they ask me for my phone number or email "I say give me yours first", and wink.
