What would the OT do: Your child is an athlete

I have a friend whose child is an above average athlete in a minor sport, swimming. The child has never harbored dreams of being elite, something that plagues the youth scene in swimming, and only in the past year to 18 months has the topic of swimming in college been advanced.
Swimming at the D1 level gets 14 scholarships, at D2 they get 8.
The only college swimming team in Mississippi is Delta State (D2), and they have made an offer, and with academics the net cost will be $0. Delta State is a top 10 team in Division II.
Valparaiso has offered a great scholarship, that combined with academics will make the net cost $0, although there will be more expense for travel. Valpo is one of the worst swimming teams in Division I, and while she liked the school a lot on the visit, she was really unimpressed with the swimming facilities and such.
The only other offer that is being entertained is Queens University of Charlotte. Its a Division II school who is the defending national champion. The coach is a national team coach and they have a brand new facility that is really nice. The offer makes the net cost around $6,000/year, which they can easily afford.
Basically you have being close to home and free vs. Division I and free vs. elite Division II and a really good deal. I had prepared them for the myth of the sports scholarship, so they are ready. There were other offers, but these are the three that are in play.
My gut says go be part of a championship team. But there is some allure to being a D1 athlete as well as being close to home.

Whichever is the best school that has a good program for her major. Swimming isn't going to pay the bills.

Valpo unless the kid wants to stay close to home for reasons that don't involve someone they are dating.

Scholarships are useless if you have to transfer to a good college after you finish your eligibility in order to get a degree that is worth a shite. Know a few people that played baseball for 4 years, then spent several more going to a school like LSU (which is by no means super prestigious in it's own right) so that they didn't have to put a degree from Jim-Bob State Technical College on their resume.

Queens and Valpo are really good schools. Delta State is your typical Southern regional college.

Good enough for scholarships but not great enough to go to a big D1 program. (Tennis)
I visited several D2 schools and realized that sports in college is a JOB. Is she really sure that is what she wants to do every moment she isn't in class? Does she want to live, eat and hang out with her teammates most of the time?
I quickly realized that I wasn't going to play tennis professionally and I didn't want to be a club pro for a living. So I said screw it and went to LSU. I made lifelong friends, had a great time and never looked back.
FWIW, I had a marketable skill and taught lessons/worked as an assistant pro through college. Paid off my school with no loans and haven't played more than ten times since then. She could always get a job coaching and teaching at an aquatics facility to help pay for school.
She has options.

We actually talked about this over the weekend. She could definitely pick up some hours helping coach little swimmers/giving lessons and go to school locally. I think it is another option being thought about.

I'd do Valpo. Free D1 education. Well known brand (matters when applying for jobs) and pretty decent school.
No one cares if they aren't good at swimming. Its a full ride to get a free education. And facilities wouldn't bother me as much in swimming. Is the water different?

I'd say swimming for a national team coach could open a lot of other doors after college. That would be a strong argument for me if I was the the athlete making a choice.

Queens and Valpo are really good schools. Delta State is your typical Southern regional college.
