remember reading a story about F. Scott Fitzgerald serving in WWI (the war ended before he shipped out). The story said that while the army did issue standard uniforms, many of the officers, including Fitzgerald, had their uniforms made. Fitzgerald had his designed and made by Brooks Brothers.
There are a lot of swole AF Joes walking around right now in tailored uniform shirts

Israel has some really great looking uniforms IMO. Can’t put my finger on why but I wish I could.

This reminds me of this excerpt...
quote:
That’s different. This western-front business couldn’t be done again, not for a long time. The young men think they could do it but they couldn’t. They could fight the first Marne again but not this. This took religion and years of plenty and tremendous sureties and the exact relation that existed between the classes. The Russians and Italians weren’t any good on this front. You had to have a whole-souled sentimental equipment going back further than you could remember. You had to remember Christmas, and postcards of the Crown Prince and his fiancée, and little cafés in Valence and beer gardens in Unter den Linden and weddings at the mairie, and going to the Derby, and your grandfather’s whiskers.”
“General Grant invented this kind of battle at Petersburg in sixty- five.”
“No, he didn’t — he just invented mass butchery. This kind of battle was invented by Lewis Carroll and Jules Verne and whoever wrote Undine, and country deacons bowling and marraines in Marseilles and girls seduced in the back lanes of Wurtemburg and Westphalia. Why, this was a love battle — there was a century of middle-class love spent here. This was the last love battle.

veryone else has covered the obvious here, but I'd like to throw out two unheralded uniforms:
One, the old Khakis that Army and USAF wore in the 60's and 70's. They sure as hell looked sharper and more military than the drab blue and forest green Class A bus driver unis they wore/wear. I always thought Khakis were my USAF dad's sharpest uniforms.
Also, instead of changing cammie patterns every few years, how about returning the tried and true OD Green fatigues? Easy maintenance, hides dirt well, and effective just about anywhere. The Israelis still largely use OD Green, or some variant of it. Hasn't hampered them in desert ops.
Those OD green where cheap too (I remember sticker shock when we switched to BDUs). At that time, we also had squadron unique organizational ball caps, which was awesome.
If I could make one change, I'd bring back ball caps (allowing facial hair would be a close second).

I was thinking that very few people wear the actual government-issued stuff after basic training. They might not be wearing tailored uniforms, but they're at least wearing commercially-produced uniforms sold at the base exchange. It's just more comfortable, better-looking, and holds up better.
