Because the priest won't get to hear that story.

Every atheist I know has a problem with the concept of faith. Moreso than the concept of God Himself.

If you tell an atheist that there's an omnicient entity that kicked off the big bang and created the universe, they'd more than likely concede the fact that it is possible.

It's the faith in the teachings of the Bible that cause them the most problems.

The problem is, there are so many denominations, religions, etc...that don't believe the bible is infallible.

I don't want to get too deep into this discussion, because this thread will be whacked, but this is has little to do with belief in the existence of God. People use all sorts of things to manipulate, subjugate and exploit. That doesn't make those things nonexistent.

I realize there are no right or wrong answers on here (sort of inherent in professing truth without an external truth standard), but this one stands out as particularly odd and counterintuitive.

I would understand the karate thing more than this.

I quit believing once I actually read the Bible for myself. Then I realized the hypocrisy of it all. As a human being, my moral beliefs and views of what is right or wrong differed vastly from God's. In the Bible there are passages where God condones slavery, incest, rape, murder, etc. For me it just seems like God is the same as the people in power today. Just a human created father figure of all father figures who is just as flawed as those who created him.

Well, in order for that to happen you would have to agree that God is only described in the Bible.

My baseline was hardcore Baptist. In 8th grade biology, we touched on evolution. I was like frick, thats how it happened. Not that I don't believe a higher power, just not how they teach it.

What does this have to do with the existence of God?

This is why these threads are banned. They end up all being the same dumb thread.

Good point and I understand that too. My money thing is pointed more at organized religion. You are correct there.

On the spirituality front, I have no clue. I tend to lean more towards science/biology/evolution theories when thinking about why I am here. It scares the frick outta me too thinking about dying and that is just the end of my conciousness for the rest of time. That really sucks.

I believe I was 20 years old and having a debate with a friend on evolution. I kind of had an “oh shite” moment when I realized I didn’t believe in God anymore. After that day I felt a huge sense of relief interestingly enough. Probably because I had believed in God before but felt guilty about not following Him.

I don’t deny the possibility of a God, but I don’t believe in the earth centric and jealous christian God who would torture people for eternity who don’t believe in Him.

I wish I believed that. One of the kindest, gentlest souls I know is constantly being shat on by other people and random events.

When I learned the “holy works” were more about moral codes than they were divinely inspired. It’s as simple as that to me and I believe I can still call myself a Christian because I do support what the Bible is saying (New Testament anyway).

That and there's zero evidence to back that credo at all.

I believe there is a creative intelligence behind all life. But not the ridiculous anthropomorphic sky daddy of the monotheistic religions.
