Car was my first sizeable purchase.
Bought a washer and dryer this year and that was the most “adulting” purchase I’ve ever made.

Bought one of those JC Penny MCS stereo systems, and a Panasonic VCR to go with the 25 inch Zenith console TV I inherited from my patents. I think all of it ran close to $700. The VCR cost more then the whole stereo system, with the rack. The VCR sat on top of the TV. When I bought a nice Sony Trinitron to "replace" the Zenith, it sat on top of it.
This one isn't mine, but mine was very similar. Wish I could say I had that cobra.
I added a cassette deck that didn't match, but had the MCS receiver, equalizer, turntable, and speakers.
This is the exact receiver I had.
The VCR was like this.
Getting a front loading VCR took going to several stores in Dallas. Most of them were still top loaders back then.
The free TV looked like this.
I had bought a new car before I ever got a paycheck.

Me too. $388 for a Sony Betamax in 1983. Bought it 6 months into my entry level bank job that paid $155/week with a goddam college degree.
