Wedding in Poplarville MS (we were all from NOLA) for a good friend with 14 groomsmen/bridesmaid; they had known each other for about 6 months before getting engaged. County and the wedding were dry - not even a cash bar. All his friends hated her and her family. Bride tried to get everybody to do the wobble for our "wedding party dance."
I've been to Poplarville a few times. I'd hate to see a wedding venue in Poplarville Ms. They couldn't splurge for Picayune or Hattisburg?

Lemme guess, the bride HAD to have her wedding at her lil home church where she grew up? Been there, knew what we were walking into. Brown bagged it into the reception. Then GTFO back to Hburg n find a bar.

Poplarville is home to the WORST speed trap within 500 miles of this area. I'm sure half the wedding party got a chance to fund their meaningless dry county on the way out of town.

You win.
Were you expected to attend?
For me, I would say every wedding I was invited to.. But more specifically a few that were on Saturdays during football season. Each time I went to the LSU game instead.

My LSU-raised sister had her second wedding in the middle of college football season - right before sunset Her dumbass husband is an Ohio State grad and knew they'd play at 11 am. The only reason I didn't say no, and the only way they knew they'd get me there, is they asked me to perform the service.
Bastards.
Bastards.

One of my best friends got married in bumfrick Illinois with a dry rehearsal dinner and dry reception. I sucked it up and did my part as a groomsman.
One of my wife's best friends got married on 10/15/11 and she had to be in the wedding, coincidentally keeping me from attending the UT/LSU game. Also a dry reception, with no TV's. I sucked it up and stayed on my phone the whole time.
My best buddy got married in Santa Barbara, CA. They had a joint bachelor/ette party in Vegas the same week of the wedding. In order to participate, I would have had to pay for a flight for me and the wife to Vegas, two nights hotel there, plus split cost to drive a charter bus to Santa Barbara, plus two nights there, then pay for flights back. Was going to be over $5K and we were being VERY conservative with the entertainment portion of the trip expenses. I called him up like a man, told him I couldn't do it, and bought them a very nice wedding gift. Turns out, multiple groomsmen and bridesmaids were waiting on someone to have the spine to say something, and I started a domino effect. The wedding still happened, albeit smaller. We weren't as close for a year or two, but he ultimately understood how ridiculous his wife was and we are still best buddies today.

I think the rule is.. If it's someone's second wedding you are automatically exempted.. Unless you have to perform the service.

Or our anniversary will be on the biggest game of the year. And, we'll party. ;)

at least Paris has a major airport. My cousin got married in some seaside town in Italy and acted surprised when none of us went.

I was asked last minute to be in a wedding 4 hours away when I already had a vacation planned. It was a friend of my wife to be. Never had met the groom.
I would have said no but the bride's cousin who was a groomsman passed away very suddenly a week before the wedding. I was a substitute for my wife in essence.
