It’s really run down, but is great academically and has an awesome music program. My Father in Law is an alumni.

Pretty good summation, king.
I would add that the all girls school, Sacred Heart at Grand Coteau, is a big bonus for this area. They actually board girls from all over the world there, i.e. Asia.
And for all the shite we give UL on here, it's a blessing and a huge boon on the economy to have a university in this town.

My brother, who was about 4 at the time, fell in that fountain while we were there to get one of those coffee mugs with our picture on it for Father's Day. One of my favorite childhood memories.
ETA: Forgot about the flipping puppet thing, I'd watch that thing for hours it seemed. Stopping at the pet store to check out all the animals too.

It was awesome in the 90s. I was in gifted but I was also zoned there. Some good teachers, decent football stadium, and I believe they were the only high school with a track. Their best sports were baseball and soccer. Always sucked at football.

I thought Lafayette High won the state football championship sometime in the early 90s, but had to forfeit all the wins due to having a few ineligible players

Around easter the pet store used to put a big box with bunnies out in the middle of the hall. That was the best part.

Last Round-up
Was that the name for the building when it was a country bar? It was always interesting when it swapped over from country to freakshow at 2AM.

They were undefeated but right before the last game someone found out one of the players was 19 or 20 and they had to forfeit all those games. I think they lost the last game. They never went to the playoffs though.

There used to be a big puppet theater in one of the hubs of the Acadiana Mall. I only vaguely remember it.
ETA: If you're talking about the flipping puppet at the shoe store...it was exactly that. One of the shoe stores had this display window with a clown hanging from a bar (like it's doing a chinup) and the bar would spin slowly causing the clown to flip over it like it was doing gymnastics.

we sucked my entire time there. 06-10
for a school as big as it is, its funny they can't field a decent football team.

If things don’t turn around economically, Lafayette could be in serious crisis very soon and see a similar shuttering that it and BR saw in the 80’s.
not true at all
maybe you could say this in 1988 or 1998 but now? By 2008 the O&G damage was done and the city has moved on to other things. A lot of the Energy crash from 2014 affected land based business and those guys were gone from Louisiana ten years ago. Offshore shelf was killed by Hurricanes and the Deepwater Horizon tragedy.
The far bigger problem is the brain drain from the 1990s that continues today. Too many people (like me) have left the area and are now earning a living and paying taxes in Texas.
Lafayette is primarily focused on health care, manufacturing and distribution and being a professional services hub for the Acadiana region

I'm pretty sure that one of the players (Michael Lee I think) transferred from another school but didn't complete the necessary paperwork. Michael Lee played on the basketball team the following year so I don't think he was too old. May not have had the grades to be eligible initially?

I'm also one of those that grew up in Lafayette and now live in Texas due to a better job after finishing college.
I loved growing up in Lafayette. I was there from late 80s to mid 90s. Global Golf was a long bike ride from my house and I used to spend a lot of time there. They had a golf driving range, batting cages, putt-putt, and a few arcade games like Excitebike.
Red's in the summers was also awesome. I would get dropped off there for 4-8 hours and do a little of everything.

One of the shoe stores in the mall had a mechanical puppet, it was a monkey(I think) that would pull himself up then flip over the bar. It was creepy and memorizing for children like me, I'd stand there every trip to the mall and watch it.
