Get some EarPlanes at Walmart or at the little airport stores. They work great

I (knock on wood) hadn’t had it bad since I was about 10. I remember being in tears on descent once, believe some of it had to do with allergies/ stopped up sinuses I used to have.

Anyway, for the return we tried these things out called “Ear Planes”, and it seemed to help with pressure equalization. Basically are just a type of ear plug. You can still find them at a lot of the airport stores.

INB4 Ackchyually...

Everyone's physics work the same.

When gaining altitude, there is less pressure so any air's volume increases. If your Eustachian tubes are clogged then this can be quite painful, but holding your nose and 'blowing' to increase pressure will only make it worse. Hold your nose and 'suck' to try to pull expanded air from behind your ear drum through your Eustachian tube.

When the plane is descending, pressure increases so the volume of air decreases. If you equalized on the way up and your Eustachian tubes are now clogged, holding your nose to 'blow' will equilibrate if you can get your tubes to cooperate.

I've had a clogged Eustachian tube after a flight where I could not equalize pressure until I used a hair dryer to heat my ear/Eustachian tube gunk so it would clear. Rare, but it happens.

Never heard this. Why is it dangerous?

Does gulping air work on planes? Works when driving.

The best two options are chewing gum or pretending that you're swallowing as you feel the pressure building in your ears. I used gum when I was younger but found the swallowing trick works best.

Had this happen once after simply driving through Gatlinburg. Still hadn't "popped" by the time I got home two hours later, so just pinched my nose and said to heck with it. Blew hard as I could and it FINALLY released. I have to admit, it's a little unnerving when what's supposed to happen on its own doesn't.

I kinda wondered about this when I had to do it (gum, yawning, etc. had not worked). What can it do in the worst case, though?

EDIT: Nevermind. You're full of crap.

I think someone just tried this today on a Delta flight.

It went awry.

Chew gum during flight especially during ascend/descend. I've always been happy when my ears popped. I've had the clog like you but it was because they didn't pop, not because they did.

ps - gum works due to swallowing, not necessarily the chewing part. That's my personal observation. FYI FWIW

Might try a little Zyrtec in case you are just a tad swollen from allergies which may be compounding the equalization problem you are having.

I have this problem, get some Afrin and use it when you’re about to board.

sudefed stimulates your eustacian (however you spell it) tubes and will help pressure equalize

Airplane ear pressure isn’t real. Neither is that mother fricker sitting next to you in the back of the plane. GET OFF OF THAT FLIGHT.

But seriously, I flew with a sinus infection earlier this year and forgot to pop a sutafed before the flight. I forgot just how painful that shite was as a kid.

I can pop my ears every time on descent and half the time I still won't be able to hear for a few hours after landing.

Sometimes I can even feel a difference going over the Luling or Grammercy bridges.

Guess I have bitch ears

If your talking about on descent, if your Eustachian tubes stay blocked, (like mine), your body will send clear blood serum to the back side of your eardrum to help push it back to normal. That’s what the “deafness” sensation is. Your body will absorb it real soon.
