El Barrio is fricking awesome and local.
Agree with this. Go eat at El Barrio then hit up the bars downtown... Collins Bar, Rogue and Pale Eddie's.
Since you're early 20's, you may want to go hit up Lakeview district. Grab a drink a Lou's Pub, then walk across the street to Moe's BBQ for a few drinks, then walk on down to Oasis or Side Bar. (Side Bar is where all the just outta college SEC kids go hang out.)
If yall are still out at 2 or 3 am, go to Nana Funk's.
As for touristy shite to do:

Big Bad Breakfast is pretty good for brunch.
There is no need at all for him to drive all the way down 280 for brunch. The best bruch in Bham is at Cosmo's in five points.

Only because Formaggios shut down last month.

Course I am biased having been a GM at Form, and building it up as much as I did. Guy who owns ALs used to work with the owners of Formaggios at the Purple Onion. Most of the late night grease holes came from guys who all worked for one man. With all the food moving into Five Points, and the bar district kind of moving to Lakeview, I don't think ALs or The Purple Onion will last.
Seriously OP, if you are hungry late night, just grab a snack and wait on The Original Pancake House to open. Or go to bed early enough to get there for breakfast. Just try to ignore the bums in the morning. They can be pushy.

Come visit Hoover!
Just kidding
Seriously all good stuff already mentioned, I live here and haven't done half this shite, making a good list as we speak
If you like sports you gotta come back in a few months, the new Barons Stadium (regions field) is really nice.
Come for a game

I moved to Bham last April and I have more fun each weekend finding a new restaurant, shop, bar, coffee shop, music venue, park, etc.
I work for AL.com, so I'm thinking about putting together a guide to bham for the new person.
On Saturday I was with a buddy over in Woodlawn section of town and happened up the coolest shop called Open Woodlawn. We walk in and there is a dj spinning records, some hipster dude giving haircuts and a full bar set up.
Birmingham has some major potential in the next five years. I love living here.

I live in Highland Park and could never imagine living over the mountain. I like being close to all the action.

That's a cool job man, I'm jealous
I'm stuck in a boring arse retail pharmacy all day in center point so you can imagine
I've lived here since 2007 but feel like I miss out on tons of stuff just because I don't know about it

WHAT?!

I've been working out of town for a few months and had no idea. That's sad. I've been looking forward to dollar wells and karaoke and delicious pizza when I come back

You'd think with UAB right there the late night drunk students would be able keep open three restaurants. Or at least two, and you'd think the two would be different types of restaurants instead of PO and Al's which might as well be the same place.
No way Al's closes anytime soon, it's a Bham institution by now. Always packed late night it seems. I don't remember the last time I saw that purple onion very busy though.
Fun fact about Al's: that building with he funny parking lot across from Al's back parking lot was the abortion clinic that Eric Rudolph bombed. I think Al's just opened earlier that year and from reading accounts of the bombing I'm pretty sure that after Rudolph planted his bomb he walked across to Al's to get some food and watch the clinic while he waited for the victim.

And to the other guy asking: yes, we're planning on staying at the Highland Hotel.

Never been there, but it sounds like my kind of place. There are actually several solid recs in this thread that I need to check out.

Love the J Clyde and Parkside.
I'd like to hear more about the place in Woodlawn. It wasn't too long ago that you wouldn't want to be in Woodlawn.....

Also, Avondale is where its at for a Saturday afternoon. Saws BBQ is A+. Galley and Garden is a new nice restaurant that is very good but pretty pricey. Sidebar/ Innisfreee are both close to each other and where most of the just out of college people hang out. Billy's is a great bar to eat at before going out if you're just looking for a pre-game like dinner (same with el Barrio).
