Check and see the conditions for Hamilton pool or Jacobs well. Both very cool and beautiful natural swimming holes but might be dried up this time of year

If you're just in town for the weekend then I would suggest minimizing the driving. The Salt Lick and Oasis are both o.k. but not worth driving all over the place.
There is a good show at Continental Club Fri. night so I would head to S. Congress Fri. night for dinner, bounce around to a few spots for drinks, and then catch the show at Continental Club.
Sat. a.m. get some breakfast tacos at Tacodeli or Torchy's then head to Barton Springs Pool or the Greenbelt for swimming. Go out to West 6th or Dirty 6th Sat. night depending on your age and what type of bars you're into.
Sun. head to Rainey St. for day drinking.

I highly suggest going to see the Master Pancake comedy group's mocking of Interstellar at Alamo Drafthouse - Ritz. Master Pancake is one of my favorite things to go see, as they mock lots of good and bad movies. I'd get tickets ASAP for Friday or Saturday as they are usually sold out come tomorrow, possibly Thursday. Buy tickets here.
Oasis is only really good for the view. Their food is overpriced and sucks.
If you want good BBQ, Salt Lick is fine but there are far better options in Austin. I'm not saying don't go, but Salt Lick is more about the experience than the food these days. It's BYOB and you can get all you can eat BBQ there, which is nice. But if you want better BBQ, hit up any one of these spots in Austin, which shouldn't have too big of a wait time:
- Valentina's
- Mickelthwaite's
- Stiles Switch
- Franklin - only if you want to get there at 7AM and spend half a day waiting in line. It's the best, but if I was visiting, I'd opt for other places that are only slightly not as good.
There are lots of good swimming holes in the greenbelt (Bull Creek, Sculpture Falls, Twin Falls, Gus Fruh) and the water won't be freezing cold. Barton Springs water is 65 degrees year round because it is spring fed. It's still a cool thing to do.
Drinking
Easy Tiger for great beer and food
Rainey Street has some nice places
Avoid Dirty 6th (between Congress and Red River)
East 6th (east of I35)
Continental Club - Usually country artists play here
Elephant Room - underground jazz bar, usually $5 - $10 cover on weekends.
Draught House Pub - Neighborhood pub with great tap selection and they brew their own. Lots of locals go here.
Eating
Lamberts - Upscale BBQ
Hopdoddy - awesome burgers
Torchy's - damn good tacos and best queso ever
Taco Deli - same as above except for the queso
Curras Grill - interior mexican
Pinthouse Pizza - awesome pizza and beer
ABGB - awesome pizza, so-so beer, but they have live music often
Outdoor Stuff
Outdoor stuff will mostly revolve around water since it's so damn hot right now.
Kayak or paddleboard on ladybird lake (town lake)
Greenbelt
Rent a pontoon boat on lake travis. There are tons of places, just google it. Justforfun is a popular one.
Pace Bend State Park - It's about a 45 minute drive, but you can get a day pass and go swim on lake travis (try Mesquite Point) or cliff jump in various areas into the lake.
As far as things going on this weekend:
Blue Oyster Cult playing at a small club - Empire Control Room.

What to do in Austin, TX
Pretend that it is weird to experience live music, Texas frat boys, and have Mexican food for breakfast.

Where are you staying? anything particular you want to eat? Do you actually want to hike or do you want to walk up a 100 foot trail to look at something?

Hang out in a gutter and drink pbr with the hipsters

Listen to what SUB said, except for the part about ABGB having "so so" beer. Their beer is outstanding.
For other local breweries, I recommend Hops and Grain, Lazarus, and St. Elmo.

thanks for the great write up.
I really wanted to go to Franklin's, and I'm on my own Friday, but no way I am going to sit in a line all day.
I know there is a cabelas next to the hotel, looks like that's Buda. That's where we are staying.
I don't want to spend all day hiking, but a few miles is ok.
Thanks for all the replies, they are very helpful.

Find a bar, light a joint, eat a burger. Lot's of good, weed friendly breweries there.

Any alternative suggestions to Oasis?
If going to Oasis don't got to the Oasis, go to Oasis brewing on the 3rd floor. Better food, beer and prices with the exact same views.

Interests are eating, drinking, swimming and other outdoor activities that are worth checking out. Driving outside of Austin for something good is not a problem.
Fortunately it just dumped here so nearly all pools are filled with water for a little while. Twin Falls is an easy hike with good spots.
Bull Creek has a bunch of good spots on it and the best is probably at 6701 Lakewood Dr, Austin, TX 7873.
Walnut Creek Park is fun and will have some flowing water right now.
Secret beach is a short hike from 400 Grove Blvd, Austin, TX 78741. Awesome spot that always has good water.
If you're up on the west side near four points I recommend a restaurant called Oasthouse. Especially for their brunch.
Pint house pizza for a pizza and a pint.
Whip In for indian bar food, great beer and wine in an old gas station.
If you end up on Rainey do Bangers, Bungalow and Craft Pride.
6th is good for easy tiger and midnight cowboy, but you have to have reservations for midnight cowboy.
Circle brewing is a good local brewery. As is Celis brewing.
Garage off of colorado and 5th has great cocktails.
Catch happy hour at Jeffrey's on Saturday. High end meals, but all food is half off at happy hour. Just order like 5 apps. It's top notch.

Skip Austin all together and spend your weekend in the Hill Country.

Bucks backyard has good live music

pinballs across 35 has a really good draft beer selection. geared more towards kids/arcade games, but has a full bar.

Franklin's lives up to the hype but not worth the wait at all. la barbecue accepts pre orders 5 days in advance. So try to place an order today to pick up sunday morning. You should be good. It's nearly as incredible.
