His first tip gripe is absurd. 40 on 262 is fine, 50 would be generous and anything above that is just superb. The rest seem a little low, but could be take out in this day and age. I didn’t realize how much I should tip on takeout until I waited tables years ago. 10% on your order which is boxed up and ready to go when you arrive should be minimum.

We should go back to a 15% standard. If the service is exceptional, bump it to 20-25%. This should be the expectation. But instead they want to shame people into tipping more because inflation is out of control and they don't want to pay servers more

Growing up it was 10-15%. Then in the last 10 years 20% became more of the norm and as somebody who worked in food service, I’m mostly happy to oblige. I’ve done 30-40% for fantastic service. If it’s carry out and your asking for a tip it’s going to be a buck or two.

Last night we ate at Chuy’s in Waco coming back from a track meet. Our waiter was a scrungy dude in his late 20s who never refilled drinks and spent his time being attentive to Baylor co-Eds. I don’t want to be a dick but he took his tip on a $60 meal from $30 to $10 by being flippant to every request and walking past us numerous times to a bunch of girls drinking water and splitting nachos.

Well, I recommend that you start tipping at 100%. You'll probably feel even better about it

Here’s your tip:

$40 seems low to me if the service was good. But he shouldn’t be complaining about what he gets, regardless.

Even so, that's $10 per hour for that singular table. I assume he had other tables during that timeframe as well. So if he made $10/hour on the other tables he's waiting on (let's say he had 10 in the four hours), that's not a bad amount of money, even after splitting it with the other staff (of whom those waitstaff are also adding to the pot).

No. Servers who publicly post that they are entitled to tips in the 30-40% range should be humiliated and mocked. Maybe this out of control tipping culture can be reigned in through shame.

Agreed.

Also, servers who post their tips online should be fired IMO.

Agreed but I don’t think most of society can calculate 15% in their head. I believe it went to 18-20% when people realized they just had to double the tax.

I know people are stupid, but it's a simple rule to learn and basic math. Move the decimal over one space and that's 10 percent. Multiply by two and it's 20 percent. Split the difference if you want to do 15 percent.

bullshite that you were going to tip him 50% before he ignored you. You literally said in your paragraph above that you do 30-40% for fantastic service, yet then say he took his tip from 50% to 20% by being flippant.

Is there no tax at this establishment or is it just a coincidence that all totals end in .00?

This seems fishy.

Tip for takeout should be $0.00. I'm paying for the food and that's the only "service" that is being provided.

I feel like tipping for a takeout order should be expected. But I resent being asked to tip for fast food at a drive thru, especially when the employee is already making 18-20 dollars an hour.

I worked in the service industry in high school and college, so I typically tip 20% standard, 25%-30% if the service was on point, and 35-40% if the service was on point and she was really good looking.

Why is it even a percentage? To me it makes more sense on the time / effort it takes to accomplish the job. A delivery driver picking up a $20 order or a $100 order from the same restaurant deserves the same tip.

The $40 was on a total amount of bill, tax included.
So likely a 20% tip.

Doubtful it was 4 hrs and doubtful he spent much time at table if they were sitting around BSing for hours on end.

Me, I tip 20% minimum on whole bill at sit down service. If service is bad, 20% on pre tax bill. If really really bad, 15% on pre tax bill.

The latter 15% has been done once or twice in probably 10 years. I usually don't go back if it is bad service.

hmm
At DW I typically tip $25 on the sit down meals. One was $270 so it really wasn't enough but better than nothing.

Olive Garden, Crack Barrel and other restaurants it's typically $20-25.

I don't tip much (if any) doing take out.
