What marks the end of a war these days and what does the victor receive?

Back in the day there were treaties established that usually resulted in land being given by the losing side to the winning side of a war which has me thinking what exactly is beneficial to the winner of a war this day in age? I know due to exploration, land was kind of up for grabs in those days but can that sort of thing even happen now?
Also, when exactly does a war end? Is there a proverbial white flag raised by a country and troops just leave the area? The idea of war itself has always baffled me this day in age because what exactly is there to win now?

Exactly. What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing.
Absolutely nothing.

It might help to know what marks the start of a war these days. Back in the day, wars were declared.
Now, we don't have many declared (by major military powers), but there's still plenty of warfare going on.
For the victor, the reward depends on the conflict; but it usually involves changes in borders; amendments to some political order; and/or getting some entity to stop doing a thing that pisses you off.
Every once in while, it's explicitly punitive. But, even clearly reactionary, vengeance campaigns can be part of a prevention of future iterations type operation (which falls under that catch all above).

The point is to have endless war. That's where all the money is and why we fight ideas like terrorism instead of actual countries. We can never win a war on terrorism just like we can never win a war on drugs.
If you declare war on a country, one country can eventually give up. There is no one to give up when you are fighting an idea.

Or at least a nice Hickory Farms gift basket.

Nothing. The days of countries going to war are over due to nukes. Now it’s all about stamping out terrorist or resistance groups without collateral damage to the local population.
