I go to a barber shop run by a Vietnamese syndicate. They speak to each other in Vietnamese and laugh and laugh and you can't help but wonder if it's you they are laughing at. But it's $14 with a hot lather straight razor shave of my neck and sideburns and as I approach 50 a good trim of my eyebrows so I tip $6 and get out of there with a good haircut for a $20 bill.
Nothing about happy endings...

Used to go to a local place near my house. But the lady that owned it ran off all the talent. It was always her, her daughter, and a random assortment of 2-3 others renting space until she drove them crazy. Made it hard to see the same one more than twice, and hard to get appointments after work since they closed at 6.
Now I go to an old school barber shop about 3 blocks from work. I can walk over and be back at my desk in about 30 minutes. They've got a new guy in there that I've used the last 2-3 times and he's great. They do the straight razor neck shave as well. Used to do that around the sideburns too but I've had a beard for several years now. In the 5 years I've been going they went up a whopping $2 once. $24 plus a tip now, but I only have to get one about 8-10 times a year and I'd much rather go there and relax, talk to the same people every time, than try to save $5 and get a crappy cut.

I go to the kind of place where old men let fly epithets and talk politics like it’s 1960.

Old time traditional barber shop. For $12 old Frank gives you a haircut, beard trim and oil, hot towel face wrap, and straight razor shave on the back of your neck. Can't beat it.

I travel a lot for work so usually stop in at the local Sport Clips. Nothing special, but they at least seem consistent.
My favorite spot though is a barber shop in my hometown where all the barbers and customers face towards each other and everyone is shooting the shite together. Plus a few of the lady barbers are sexy with that tatted/pierced look, not the usual over done hair/makeup trashy girl who smells like cigarettes stereotype.
The attention to detail, making sure every line is perfect and each region of hair is cut even, no strays, makes a big difference. And they only charge $10.
