I wear shoes more than 20 minutes a week also, and outside of my neighborhood. I also don't wear them to spend time with my kids, but in a business atmosphere. Dumb argument

I am not an extreme rider and neither or my kids. As my kids grew up a bike would only fit them for a few years. By that time, they were shot and falling apart. I bought a used specialized that normally goes for around $650 for $200 with new tires and such. I don't own a bike shop, and most bike shops are just selling used clients bikes and not making much on them. It's a great alternative to shelling out a bunch of money and having something that's reliable with a few scratches on it here and there. You can't find that at a big box store, period.

I thought all families these days tooled around the neighborhood in golf carts.

If you're just cruising around the neighborhood then anything will do really. Get something used that has a relaxed geometry like a hybrid. If you have even basic mechanical skills you can keep it up and you'll be much happier than buying some cheaply manufactured bike.
