Probably the same reason you don't buy shoes from Payless.

I wear shoes more than 20 minutes a week also, and outside of my neighborhood. I also don't wear them to spend time with my kids, but in a business atmosphere. Dumb argument

Please explain exactly what differences someone looking to ride around his neighborhood a couple times a week with his son would notice enough to validate a purchase of $600+. He's not looking to go try to be side mirror targets riding the river road in rush hour traffic. What bike shop you own bruh?

I am not an extreme rider and neither or my kids. As my kids grew up a bike would only fit them for a few years. By that time, they were shot and falling apart. I bought a used specialized that normally goes for around $650 for $200 with new tires and such. I don't own a bike shop, and most bike shops are just selling used clients bikes and not making much on them. It's a great alternative to shelling out a bunch of money and having something that's reliable with a few scratches on it here and there. You can't find that at a big box store, period.

The last bike I owned was a trek mountain bike back in 1995

I still have my Trek hardtail that I bought in 2000. Can't go wrong with that brand.

Bought a mountain bike from Academy two months ago and my nuts are still in my stomach. Would not recommend.

If you're just cruising around the neighborhood then anything will do really. Get something used that has a relaxed geometry like a hybrid. If you have even basic mechanical skills you can keep it up and you'll be much happier than buying some cheaply manufactured bike.

E bikes is where its at baw-
Had all types of bikes - Specialized/SWorks, Cannondale, etc loved em then. Now I like electrified. Converted a couple Mongoose Fat Tires to 48v 1000w was just like riding a silent dirt bike twist the throttle and go, no pedaling needed would go (~25MPH easy for 50miles) and sold them.

Just ordered the Ms and I these two from china. Kids gonna have to keep pedaling since point is to wear them out.
