It's not 1 or the other lol.

$400k a year is over $30k a month gross. A $100-125 car is probably a $1500 for month payment or so on the high end. It'll hardly stop you from the other finer things in life you earned for yourself if you make that much.

We lease our cars because we like driving something new every three years. Price is what it is. Usually we have a couple of Volvo suvs

I think 1/3 or below is pretty comfortable for most people. This is just a general rule of thumb without knowing anything else. I've read financial guidelines that say to not spend more than 50% of your annual income but I'd never go that high

I don't really consider my wife's income because we both need vehicles but I suppose we could average it out since we share finances.

Not to mention most people work their way up and don’t just start at $100k-$125k car. You can have a decent amount to put down from your previous trade. My last two trade ins I got 57k for 2017 F-250 and 54k or maybe 57k for my 2017 Audi S7. All that money went towards the down payment on my new vehicles.
