I'd avoid: College Station, Gainesville, and Starkville. The others I'd be able to handle.

My brother lived in Bryan, commuted to CS. I visited him a few times and loved it.
The fact that people have to "commute" to school, says a lot to me about what I'm talking about.

A city with a Metro population of around 800k has some bad parts? NO frickING WAY!!!
The problem is how much bad shite is adjacent to the university.
Tigerland has section 8 housing and murders.
North of Aster is a warzone with nearly half a dozen murders in the last 6 months.
The college drive area gets super sketchy at night with fights and shootings outside of I-hop and Walmart with frequency.
Gardere is close to campus as well.
North Baton Rouge has a higher murder rate than Kabul, Afghanistan.
To top it all off, Baton Rouge has one of the most incompetent and corrupt police forces in the country and the worst traffic for a city its size in America.
So yeah, Baton Rouge is kinda shitty, but so is Tuscaloosa.

Also, Ole Miss seems to be a destination for BR money kids as well.
Yup. Two of my best friends while I was at Ole Miss graduated from Episcopal and Dunham.

In fairness commuting to CS from Bryan is like commuting to LSU from Port Allen.

Should take 10 minutes but is completely impassible much of the time?

I live outside the Tuscaloosa city limits, in a subdivision on the river. I commute 20 minutes into the city every day. Are you telling me everything I've said in this thread is invalid?

Not sure but that's where St. George's own Lionel Rainey went.

If you're telling me, there are redeeming qualities to College Station, yes, perhaps.

Have you ever gone there at night? There's multiple cop cars in the parking lot of I-Hop every night for a reason.
Also, 5 minutes down Burbank from campus is pretty damn close. When it was built, it was designed as cheap housing for students before the Section 8 came in and took it over.

Yeah I really regret staying in BR to go to LSU because of the I-Hop on college.

If I grew up in BR I would have left too. I wanted some independence at that age and needed to get away. I think you grow as a person more away from the nest

I live two minutes down the road. I walked from Bennington to the bulldog the other night at 11pm and had no problem.
Yea IHOP has detail cops there on weekend nights. 1 of them
You're exaggerating the hell out of shite to make your point

When I was in school in Alabama, the non technical degree trendy thing for non-Catholics from Louisiana, Georgia, and Tennessee were Birmingham Southern and Samford. The trendy thing for Alabama kids was Tulane, Emory etc. Its always been an out of state thing for experience and widdening the horizon.

a decent number of kids who attend either Dunham, U-High, or Episcopal who are going to Alabama. I am friends with a wealthy guy who has sent all 3 of his kids to Alabama.
if you're going to drop that kind of coin on high school why would you want to send them to LSU?

Made it out of the Walmart last night at 10pm without getting punched, stabbed or shot. Guess I'm lucky.

Lots of NO area people go to UAT too, it's a combination of things.
Some look down on who goes to LSU. Some want to get out of state. Others have no loyalty and want to jump on the bama bandwagon. Football is big in LA so it makes sense for sell outs to go to a school with a good program if they are turning their backs on their home state. Gump U is the cool, trendy place to go (all myth, that town is a shithole with a cocaine problem). Some think bama today is what LSU was 30-40 years ago as far as campus/greek/night life goes.
Ole Miss - still pretty popular for the "want to get away" crowd because obviously they don't have enough success to jump on a bandwagon.
UGA - too far from NO/BR and most can't get in anyway. Best college town though.
Auburn - no idea why it's little brother to bama for the LA ex pats
A&M - Hard to leave places like BR and NO known for loose lifestyles and go to nerd boot camp.
State - yeah, no
UF - very far, cool town
Ark - lulz
Mizzou - no
Vandy - the people who can get in Vandy, fit at Vandy
Tenn - very far
Kentucky - football fans with pride don't go here.
