Don't do it man. People from El Paso used to go to Jaurez like people from BR would go to NOLA. Now they don't go unless they absolutely have to. It's definitely not worth the risk for a random day trip and site seeing.

While you're there definitely try the local food. Your best bet is probably going to be Doniphan Drive in Canutillo (a suburb of El Paso). There are a bunch of stationary taco trucks and restaurants here. It's not too far from the Outlet mall just off the interstate. Flautas Tepalca is one we always make time to stop at. They serve great flautas (crunchy rolled tacos) and tortas (grilled sandwiches) as well as mexican fruity juice drinks and ice creams. It's kind of in the middle of the restaurants on this street, if you keep driving either direction you'll find more hole in the wall restaurants and taco trucks.

As of January 2013, Juárez's murder rate placed #37 of the highest reported in the world at 38 murders per 100,000 inhabitants.

It's very safe. It's amazing that more of the shite from Juarez has not bled over.

As for things to do, go check out the boot outlets. Got a couple pair of Tony Lama's on the cheap at the factory outlet.

Head out to Cattleman's Steakhouse in Fabens. Worth the drive.

I did it 12 years ago and had a great time. Things were MUCH different then. No way in fricking hell would I do it today.

Went to El Paso last year for a karate tournament. Walked around town a bit to look for restaurants, and we did not see a single white person. Might as well be in Mexico.
