Why does this occupy your thoughts? Will being able to use the word bring some missing balance to your life? It's a word, to some offensive, but probably really not affecting you one way or the other.

Well, the word is decidedly color based. Back in the day it was simply to denote skin color rather than character, being a derivative of Negro Negre.
Today I think it speaks more of to pejorative character, since you won't hear decent black folk being called that usually...except by other black folks.
It's truly a strange phenomenon.
