How did you get 13 cm?

You have to relate the given numbers to get a right triangle with a base of 5cm and the adjacent has to be 1cm shorter than the hypotenuse.

It was just a start up question, he sat down introduced himself and then right off the bat he asked me this question. This was followed by a million questions on power related things.

It's the only line in the triangle that goes from the center to a point on the completed circle.

I use an online calculator for work that I have bookmarked, but this is the actual formula.

Ok that formula makes sense, but I don't think OP used that during the interview.

I understand that the hypotenuse is the only one reaching from the center to the outside point, but how do I know that the lower corner of the triangle (the starting point of the hypotenuse) is starting in the center?

took me way too long, but:

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

(r-1)^2 + 5^2 = r^2

r^2 - 2r + 1 + 25 = r^2

r = 13
