In all seriousness, most are for show. A muffler alone will do little for performance. But there are some trucks cruising around LA that you'd never guess are legitimately faster than some/most sports cars.
Personally, I love the sound of any engine with a good sounding exhaust. I grew out of the "have to have exhaust on my daily driver truck" phase quite some time ago, but if I ever get an extra vehicle to play with its going to be fast and loud.
