Depends on how hard u wana work. 2 yrs ago, (8yrs exp) i was working nights and working 36hrs one wk, 48 the next and brought home just over 100k. Not bad for working half the year. Took off weeks for vacation, hunting etc. I know some nurses who make well above that and work 6 days a week. I dont have as much tolerance for the general public to do that.

I've had intimate relations with several of both of these occupations and think you're onto something with that Mt. Rushmore thing.

Fun fact, anytime you hear a song by The Fray in a hospital, someone is dying.

That's the beauty of being an RN. You can do whatever you want. You can work like a dog and make a good bit over $100k if you want or dial it back for a better lifestyle while making a little less but still solid.

Amazing flexibility.

I found my comfort zone. My hours are great, benefits are great and I haven't woken up to an alarm clock in 10 years.

Travel nursing. Serious money.

I took a 6 week travel assignment as a Trauma nurse in Honolulu several years back and worked 3 12hr shifts/wk while on assignment and was making 3 1/2 times what I make working my normal position. The travel nursing company I worked thru on that assignment paid for round trip 1st class airfare, my rental car, weekly gas allowance, apartment a block away from the beach in Ewa Beach that included all utilities..the only expenses I had were food and any extra traveling/sightseeing I did.

What do nurses make if they hire out privately? Like full time home nurse for an elderly person?

You mean thru an agency such as hospice or home health?

Before I got married, I used to hang around hospitals and hit on nurses. The cafeteria was a great place to ambush the young ones. Used to set up a laptop and set some nice Kentucky horsebreeding farm as your home page. Tell them your grandad owns it and it is soon to be yours. Told them I was in town visiting a sick relative. If asked about sick relative I gave a vague response and deferred back to thoroughbreds and clean country living, derbys, high society , etc.. Arranged date to talk more about my future as a wealthy horse breeder and would smash in a hotel room. On to next hospital.

It's a short con but effective. You have to study up a good bit on the horse breeding business though to seem legit.

Not really.... say I wanted to hire a RN full time, but privately (not thru agency).

Around here (SC) the annual salary for a true private duty nurse working ft hrs averages between $55-60k depending on experience. The issue with private duty nursing without having an agency "back" you is with insurance/malpractice issues. The nurse would have to carry his/her own policy funded privately unless the client agreed to include those fees in the contract. A lot of nurses already carry a small amt of private insurance outside of what their employer offers but nowhere near what would be needed if they were truly going to work privately.

No benefits or malpractice included, id say in the $75-80k range. Buddy has his own LLC and contracts himself to ERs privately and charges them around $65hr. They cover malpractice of course. Hes currently in pennsylvania

I'm leaving night shift in 2 weeks and gonna be working as a nurse in infection control. M-F; 8-4:30. No weekends, nights, or holidays.

I'll be salaried now...but will be making more than I did working nights 36 hours a week.

That's the great thing about nursing. When you feel like you need a change....there are so many avenues you can take and still be working as a nurse.
