Pay off the ~200k I owe on the house, throw 50k in a college fund for each of the kids, just to get it to the first three fitty spent. Then take a lower stress, slightly less paying job. Probably buy the wife a new ride too. Toss the rest in an IRA and enjoy the next 20 years working and building up that nest egg. Maybe invest in real estate along the way.

Nothing major. I can retire.

I don't have an expensive lifestyle so the principal alone would get me to Social Security age. And I'd be earning interest the whole time.

Oh ok. I'd buy some eggs, I'm almost out.

Grocery shopping tomorrow.

I spent the first 5 years of my career working for a CPA firm. A few years in industry and the last 7 in the corporate finance department of a large bank. A few things sunk in to my thick head over that time.

You'd be hard pressed to find a safe return of 4%. You could live on 40k before taxes?

If you’re close enough to retirement and your house is paid off, it would be pretty easy. Of course if I was retirement age I wouldn’t just live on the interest. Take about 60k a year. And that would be very comfortable without any large payments like a mortgage or car note.

I spend $50,000 the first year and only get 2.5% interest, that reduces the balance to $975k after one year. I'd make $24,375 in interest the second year so I spend just a bit more of the principal.

Don't feel like doing the math the whole way through, I just need to make it to Social Security age. (If SS goes away a full blown economic collapse will be either the cause or the result, and money in the bank will be useless anyway.)
