New Orleans feels too grimy to call home. It’s nice to visit though.
If it weren’t for the traffic, Baton Rouge would be great!

The appeal is that even though there is shite services, shite government, shite crime, shite streets and shite draining in New Orleans, there is pretty architecture, great entertainment with weekly festivals, great music, great food, nice people and overall unique qualities that make for a unique life. The things that suck are no joke and the great things about New Orleans don't lessen them, but like anything else, when you're presented with something time and again, you get used to it.
If I'm being honest, a lot of places are kind of boring. New Orleans, even with the shithole qualities, is a fun and lively place to live (or die when it gets too lively).

My wife and kids live here.

NOLA is a complete shite hole. The only nice nearby area is the north shore, 45+ minutes away.
What? The top three wealthiest zip codes in all of Louisiana are in New Orleans. And a lot of the houses in those areas are phenomenal.

I don't know about great but it gets too much hate on here. Plenty of people live fine here. You just have to move close to work to not deal with the traffic. My average commute is probably 15 minutes but we don't live out in the burbs.

If I had the opportunity to move back to Baton Rouge (or to Lafayette or New Orleans) I would have taken it. That opportunity never came and I don’t think it ever will. I have made peace with that reality.
For those that leave: At some point, Louisiana no longer feels like home. It’s weird when it hits you, but it does hit you. Then it becomes depressing/sad to visit a place with lots of memories but no future in your life.
Apparently just because you are from an area doesn’t mean you belong there.

Yeh. I guess “great” is a slight overstatement. But it would be waaaaay better if it weren’t for the traffic. I’m 15 mins from my kids’ school. So it's not too bad for me. But the extracurricular stuff is a pain. And the traffic after afternoon carpool is reallllllly annoying. The whole area around perkins and Acadian gets backed up, and perkins all the way to bluebonnet is backed up because there’s SO many schools in that area. SAS, SJA, CHS, Lee High, a public school on Acadian i don’t know the name of, Glascgow middle, a school in kenilworth, and another little elementary school in Southdowns on Hood. These schools all spill out onto perkins around the same time.

Yeh. South Louisiana is special because of the people. Most everyone is friendly here. There’s real Southern Charm.

NOLA is like the slut you wanna bang but never marry.

Baton Rouge and New Orleans have great paying plant jobs. BR has Exxon and Dow and many more refineries all the way to NOLA. Great spots to live between the two cities.

It’s weird. BR absolutely sucks, but I miss it with a passion. If it were up to me I’d move back in a heartbeat.
I graduated in 2009. I moved back to South Texas shortly after. In the years since, I still went to games. First it was 6 home games, then maybe 5. The number slowly declined until it was 0 last year. I wanted to go, but it just didn’t fit my schedule.
The last games I attended in the Box were 2012, and I haven’t been in the PMAC since I graduated.
I miss LSU, but BR was home. As long as I stayed out of the hood, it was enjoyable and a great place to be a student. That includes time living off campus. That place has changed a lot, but in some ways, very little. I miss it.
I’m at the point where I may just go and visit next year regardless of games.

People have family and friends there and dont leave
This. I’ll admit, it was tough to leave. After my mom helped me move and flew back home, I’ll admit I cried for a solid 10 minutes. But I only get one life, and I want to experience living in other places. Plus it’s extremely nice not having to worry about flooding, hurricanes, and everything thats happening right now. Come to think of it, there really aren’t any natural disasters in this area

Family loyalties are strong. I always heard you should bloom where you’re planted.

New Orleans has a one of a kind culture, amazing entertainment, big league sports and events, best food in the world, and is fun year round. Too many bad people with guns these days. BR is less endearing but has very nice neighborhoods, and year round access to LSU sports. Alabama has no interesting cities and only great asset is the Fulf Shore beaches.
