So I put up a privacy fence about 4 years ago

My yard goes back another 100 feet or so behind my fence. My neighbor wants to go all the way back on our property line.

Since I put half of it on the property line we share, should I offer to pay for a portion of the rest of it all the way back?

It's a normal rectangle lot. Nothing complicated. I fenced in half the rectangle. Spent 4 grand, it would have minimum cost me 8-10 grand to do the whole thing. Only half the lot is developed. I needed a fence quickly because I was having a problem with bears coming into my yard. I live in Pandhandle of FL.

Did he help pay for the portion you put up?
Do you want the fence?

is he going to give you an ugly side of the fence? if not, don't pay him, he is putting it up for his benefit, not yours. Now if you were going to complete the fence on your back and other sides, then yeah, I'd split the one side with him

I believe 8” off the property line is standard.

Depends on if you want a privacy fence there or not.

Going to go against my better judgement and agree with TH03.

This is a way you can fence in more. Fence all your crap in.

You either have a very oddly shaped yard or I’m not understanding what you’re saying.

I put mine up 4 years ago. He just moved in.

Yes, I would like it all the way back. I pretty much already put up half.

He's not asking for me to pay but I feel like I should at least think about offering.

I'm thinking I don't owe anything since I paid for half the property line and I paid for that all myself. So half his property on our side of the yard is done.

If he wants to finish it all the way out then I should be good without owing him anything correct?

Even though he has to put up only half his property line because I paid for it already in full before he moved into his house?

Yeah, I'm going to need a MS Paint depiction of the situation

I would do whatever it takes to at least make it match what you already have up so it may be worth it to at least help him put it up.

It's a jungle back there. It's never been developed and it would have been another 3-4 grand to complete the project. I didn't have the extra money at the time.

I did it quick, I needed Bears to quit coming in my yard. Yes, Bears. I live in the panhandle of FL.

If a bear really wants to come in it can but it will at least make them take a detour instead of climbing the fence.

If he ties into the fence you have already built.... he should pay you for half of it.

In my community, apparently the key is waiting for both neighbors to get fences then simply putting in the rear of your own yard to connect them.

I’ve seen it on multiple occasions. LOL

The best is when the connecting fence is totally inconsistent with the surrounding ones. The a-hole who puts up chain link between two privacy fences.

Bears don't come now because you fenced in half of the yard?

I have a fair amount of experience in this area, if you want a fence, build it, if a neighbor offers to split the cost, that's a bonus, can't force them to, can't prevent them from building a fence on the property line either

Christ. There is no opening to the fence. I fenced half our property line then went across the back. So the fence runs from house to the back, across the back then back to the house.

The back of the house makes a perfect square with the fence.

Then how are bears getting into the yard? Do you need a taller fence?
