Zelda, Super Mario, and a little later Mortal kombat and Street Fighter were pretty big deals in my childhood.

Sadly it's not close...

Fortnite is up there with Goldeneye, the original Mario Kart and Halo2 both in gamer ratio and gameplay

Goldeneye on n64 was one of the all time best games ever. My son and his cousins play fortnite but it’s ok nothing special about it. I think it’s overhyped.

It's the more playful nature of a "serious" shooter...
Combined with the build skill, solid physics engine, and scenario play...it's compelling
