I know it's purely anecdotal, but I don't think the ACT is a very good way to predict college success. I made a 24 and have a higher GPA than most of my friends who all scored higher than me. A few of my friends who scored in the 30s aren't even in school anymore.

I'm sure there's a general trend, but I doubt it's very strong.

I don't think you're wrong, but I also don't think that a "good" test is very feasible. There are just too many factors that go into whether or not someone will be successful in college: direction, ambition, general personality, many external factors, etc.

that test prep is in a whole other league these days

I can definitely see that. Students are starting at much lower grades now, as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if even basic test prep was worth three points on the composite.

Maybe even more if you were weak in one of the sections and prep helped you identify specific areas and shore them up.

Test prep is huge. When I first took it, I struggled with the Science section. After some prep, I learned that the science section was really just reading comprehension. I went from a 19 in science to a 32. My reading went from a 29 to a 34 with extra timed practice. My math and English scores stayed relatively flat so I ended up with a 29, up from a 26.

The School of Hard Knocks puts less value on a simple ACT score than the other "diploma mills"

I took it in 96 and only took it once, I had a comp 25 with a 34 science and 35 math. I made around a 14 or 15 on the reading comp due to reading slow.

I think I read where the average ACT score at Auburn now is around 25 or 26 and Bama is around a point lower.

A "good" score on the ACT would be around 28ish if you are wanting to go to college, if you don't give a shite about college, 24 or 25 would be a good score.

i got a 28, and i was told it was really good, but it was low for my grade, but the only people in my grade that were taking it were going to ivy league schools

Almost all decent schools require the SAT, so this is a pointless thread.

Well, yeah. You need 30+ to get into a great school. 20+ will probably get you into your major state school.

According to actual data (not OT land where everyone scores 30+) 25 composite is the 79th percentile. So I guess it really comes down to what percentile is considered "good". I'd say that anything over 75th percentile is pretty good.

I've always thought that ACT is more of a test of intelligence, while GPA was indicative of determination/application. Both are important in being a successful student.
