What is a covenant marriage, and how did Louisiana come to have them?

They also apparently exist in Arkansas and Arizona, and there are pretty strict requirements for divorce.

Religious idiots thinking that if it were really hard and expensive to get a divorce, people wouldn't get divorced and would therefore stay in bad marriages and that would somehow be a good thing. They were assisted by a law professor at LSU who for some idiotic reason agreed with them and had enough credibility with the legislature to convince them to pass it. I loved it because I was practicing family law in Louisiana at that time, and could make ten times as much from a covenant marriage divorce as I could from a normal divorce.

You have to go through pre-marriage counseling with a religious figure or marriage counselor on the importance and seriousness of the commitment and sign certain agreements that you will go through counseling if troubles arise, etc. Harder to enter into, harder to get out of. Only like 1% of marriages are covenant marriages.

This 100%. Covenant marriage was her baby. She made sure to get it in. You gotta make sure to include religion in marriage!

Or maybe think twice about jumping into a marriage? Maybe date for 2 or 3 yrs instead of 2 or 3 months?

It's been amended since so there doesn't have to be a religious element. But the spirit of the statute was to bring religion back into the public arena, specifically marriage.

why can't divorce be illegal? using the reasoning of gay marriage kids should not have to have divorced parents.

I had to wait 6 months to get a divorce with no kids. They should make people wait 6 months to get married after applying for a license.
