R22?

Commercially I think it's around $30/lb, but it changes frequently. The government is trying to faze it out.
Other types are usually cheaper.

Not sure what it goes for residentially though.

Commercially?

I'm sorry, but that's ridiculous.

Saw some old R-12 for dirt cheap awhile back at work out of the country the other day. Wish I could have brought some back.

R22 is being fazed out and will no longer be produced after 2020. The 25 (or 30, can't remember) jugs were going for $799 when a year a go they were $350. They will be close to $1000 next year. Most A/C systems installed now are R410a.

If you get a low quote run with it!

Best thing to do is call around. Ask how much for a service call and how much so they charge per pound of freon 22. Ask if they weigh it in. Oldest trick in book for AC mechanics is to tell you that you need 5 pounds when they only put 3 pounds in.

Freon 22 currently cost around $30 per pound from wholesalers to licensed AC mechanics. If they charge more than $75 per pound, they are ripping you off. Watch them and make sure they weigh it in to make sure that they are being honest.

Yes it is being phased out by 2020 and will continue to go up in price as EPA forces reduction in production. Manufacturers of Ac equipment are involved in trying to force people to convert to new 410-A systems so they can sell more equipment. If you have a freon leak and have to add freon more than once a year, it is really time to put in a new system. I can make suggestions!!!

just had 2 lbs installed on Friday. It was a hundred dollars, but I have a service plan with my AC company where they do biannual inspections so I got a reduced rate. He said it would be $79 per lb if not on the service plan I have. I am keep a check on my temp splits so that if drop again I will bite the bullet and get a new system installed.
