Operation Barbarossa was a huge mistake for Nazi Germany. They didn't have the resources for opening up the Eastern front and were counting on a quick end to the attack via Blitzkrieg which ultimately failed.

In your opinion what would Europe look like today were he not to try and take Moscow? Would there be swastikas all over the place right now, and would the Third Reich be a reality? Or do you think the allied forces would have invaded anyways, and if so would they be successful?

Hitler had to invade the Soviet Union. It was his core principle. His entire political philosophy was built around it.

I'm not sure the US would ever have done that though.

Or if Hitler would have chose to sign a peace treaty with Russia early on when Russia was kicking their arse kicked. Russia would have surely signed any peace agreement offered and Germany could have fought a war on one front.

Then the transgenders wouldn't have the opportunity to take dumps in women's bathrooms. Crisis averted.

Hitler hated communists.

Communists embrace everybody in theory.

Hitler was the opposite of that

The royal family would be living in Canada right now.

He strategically had to do it. England posed little threat, and Russia was the stronger enemy (with resources like oil and agriculture as well). Since war between the Russians was inevitable, it made sense to strike.

I watched a show about the rise of Hitler and found myself wondering the same thing. They signed an agreement in 1939 but when the Soviets attacked Finland and couldn't defeat them, Hitler thought he could easily defeat the Soviets. Makes me wonder how different history would have been had he not tried to take on the Soviets and they had kept their agreement in tact.

Hard to see the agreement staying intact for any period of time though. Hitler telegraphed in Mein Kamp that he considered eastern Europe as part of his Lebensraum ("living space"). As others have mentioned, both sides hated each other politically, and some believe Stalin was trying to get ramped up to attack eventually, given that he had so many troops stationed on his western front.

Hitler's view of history was of a fight to the death between races. The Germanic race needed land in the east, both for food, and to engage in struggle to keep itself vigorous. He wrote about this from the very earliest, and he wasn't the first one-a number of German ideologues had been writing about it since the mid 19th century. Eastward expansion was Nazism. Without it, it would have been a different ideology altogether.

Keep in mind that this was before the agricultural revolution of the fifties and sixties. The amount of acreage needed to grow food for a given population was seen as more or less a fixed number, and Germany didn't have enough land to be self sufficient. Germany had nearly starved during WWI when the British blockade cut off food imports. Hitler was determined not to let it happen again. He saw the vast agricultural lands in the East as a strategic asset, much like leaders in a later era saw the middle eastern oilfields.

I think this is also one of the motives driving China's current aggressiveness. They think climate change will make feeding themselves difficult, and they need more territory. It doesn't matter whether you believe in climate change, or if climate change is in fact true. They believe it, and that is sufficient to drive their foreign policy.

They already had a non aggression pact, which Hitler violated. I think Stalin took it personally and would not accept peace with Germany.

Wasn't there an issue of oil fields in Russia that Germany needed to supply their war?

I always thought it was weird that Hitler didn't press the Japanese to invade or at least open up a second front in Russia's east. Then Hitler wouldn't have faced the full brunt of the Soviets.

Yeah it was inevitable that the two countries fight each other but had Germany defeated the Brits and had only one front to fight I believe things would've turned out much different.

One of two things happens:
1. A border skirmish breaks out and the USSR and Nazi Germany go to war at a later date.
2. Hitler and Stalin listen to Japan, and the USSR joins the axis powers and all of the eastern hemisphere is f**ked.
