quote:. There is no place to put all of the spoil ! ( dredged material). Here it comes, “ Just bring it to the coast “. If you say that you probably wanted to rebuild the coast with Katrina debris or Christmas trees. Lots of folks don’t have a clue. They need to read about river bed avulsion.
There aren’t enough dredges...

There would be a massive transfer of wealth from Nola/BR.

Ferriday would be the new St. George and I'm not even joking.

Not to worry. They will bring back a 67 year old Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Denzel Washington George Clooney, a computer generated image of Morgan Freeman and a cameo by Hunter King, who will use a top secret Corps of Engineer super dredger, currently in storage in Natchez to repair the channel and save the world during the last 10 minutes of filming.

Wasn't there a pretty informative video posted last time this came up? What was the guys name in that video?

There was a Clive Cussler novel where an evil Chinese businessman built this massive superport at Port Fouchon then attempted to hide a bunch of explosions in an old riverboat that was traveling upriver to be turned into a museum, crash said boat into the levees near Donaldsonville, and redirect the Mississippi River down Bayou Lafouche to his new super port.

I was thinking about a plot more like Space Cowboys.

There’ll be a line again to eat at Tampico’s.

avulsion, has Jack shite to do with Dredging the Mississippi.
Part of the OP was what would happen to the Port of New Orleans. Answer it can survive. It will silt up at a slower rate and change to brackish water. But commerce wouldn't just move to the new outlet, not for decades at least. Go down to
the Corps office in New Orleans, they have all sorts of possible river course change studies, with maps and proposed projects such as more diversions, rebuilding the existing spillways to prevent a course change. None which will work if they don't act on it.
