There's 1000s of lightning bugs out our house. Had one in my room the other night, scared the bejeebers out of me when I turned the light off, and there was this strange green glow under the sheets.

Last week my nephew (5) from Baton Rouge stayed with us. I took him out one evening catchin lightning bugs and we caught a jarful. He was amazed.
Good fun.

Are there less now than there used to be? or just my perception?...
Fighting Malaria and many other diseases by killing Mosquitos --- DDT destroyed the population we had. They have a 2 year life cycle, live some part of time in the ground before reaching adulthood and have the ability to reproduce.
There are some great resources on line for Firefly's

If you capture a lightning bug, can you have a mini thunderstorm ?

I think it has to do with the drought of the past couple of years. I agree, haven't seen any for years, but I've seen plenty this year.

They're all over our yard every year. I caught a couple the other night so my girl could see them up close.

I saw some of these in Manhattan last summer. Didn't think they lived that far north, especially in such a populated treeless area.

I still see them around my house in the summertime. You need some acreage with woods nearby.

They are all over western NC. Generally for most of the summer. They like higher elevations and cooler temps. Also see them in Arkansas on camping trips.

I see bunches of them this time of year. But they need tall grass to lay their eggs. So if everyone in your hood has a manicured lawn, no dice. That and all the chemicals you people pour on your lawns that kills everything.

They are all over the place here in the Texas Hill Country. Maybe they got tired of smelling swamp arse.

They need rotting wood, not grass.
