I think they may have been a casualty of the mosquito abatement program. I still see them in rural areas which don't seem to spray.
This has to be the answer. My wife and I noticed this recently.

I've been seeing a ton of them every night where I am

they went out of production. nowadays you just see the older ones flying around, usually carrying illegal cargo. they're a favorite for scavengers.
Trevor - what you did there? I see it.

What a waste of time and money. Only thing less effective is the "war on drugs".

Use to see them all the time when I was a kid, then they all but disappeared and I pretty much forgot they existed. Moved to Nashville a couple weeks ago, and it was like my childhood cam flooding back. I love it

The new LED bugs are slowly taking their place. You will see more in the future.
But honestly, they will be slimmer In size

They're at St. Mary's Hospital in Salt Lake City.

I still see them all over the place during the summer

all over my yard in atl, and i live in town not burbs. no mosquito service here. skeeters go to bed (mostly) around 10, so i wait until after that to sit outside and enjoy the lightnin' bugs.

caught one last night in my yard and it made me realize that I hadn't seen one in years. When I was a kid we'd catch seemingly dozens every night. Are there less now than there used to be? or just my perception?...
The new EPA Regulations of 2003 on Phosphorus, have mandated that no more than two Lighting Bugs may fly per acre.
The Lighting Bug community is up in arms over this new regulation. Due to poor organization within said community, and natural attrition of senior leadership of the Baby Boomer aged bugs there appears to be no relief in sight to have these no fly restrictions by the EPA lifted in the foreseeable future.

The stuff they spray for mosquitos kills a lot of bugs. Catalpa worms/butterflies have become scarce in neighborhoods too...
This. We have 3 nice catalpa trees here, and I haven't seen a catalpa worm in over 20 years.

True that, I have not seen them in over ten years, every summer they were out in full force.
they decided that NOVa was to full of hot air so they high tailed it to SWVa
SWVa>NOVa
