quote:You're getting downvotes, but you're 100% correct. The lack of any real organization and one or two dominant gangs keeping the drug trade more or less regulated in the city is a huge contributing factor in New Orleans' high homicide rate. It's just small groups of morons who kill each other over stupid things and lack any "business" sense.
Most cities with real gangs have less violence than "non gang" cities.
That's also a major reason for Chicago's high murder rate. The killings skyrocketed after a few major gang leaders were arrested and convicted, which left low-level gang members to do their own thing without direction.

Exactly.
Detroit, N.O. St Louis, Flint Michigan, Baton Rouge all top 10 murder rate cities. Very little formal gangs. I'm not sure about Baltimore's gang situation.
LA meanwhile, gang capital USA has a pretty pedestrian murder rate.

Crips and Bloods are blanket gangs. Like they aren't all connected. You get enough people together, wear a color and call yourselves a blood or cript.
The nola gangs are all territory based, usually a block or street in the name. For instance the 3nG gang from 3rd and Galvez. A gang may claim cript or blood, but it's not like the mafia getting orders from LA or NY.
The only local gang like that is MS13 and H13, the latter being Honduran offshoot of Ms13. But they are actually lowkey and business orientated.
The tiny street gangs, were kids of people on rental vouchers are the bloodthirsty ones. No rules, no cares. They will kill over the slightest thing.
Want to stop the violence? Start taking away benefits and vouchers for family members connected to gangsters.

There is definitely drug organization in New Orleans but its just localized. The organization comes from the different drug cartels which each supply the local neighborhood gangs. They infrastructure was formalized after Katrina when many of our local business leaders met other business organization leaders in Houston, Atlanta, Memphis, Dallas, etc through the different trade associations and grew their supply hub relationships with different manufacturers.

Does the mafia still have a presence there or are they pretty much irrelevant now?
I was reading an article a few weeks ago on Carlos Marcello and the author mentioned that when the serious Mafia presence moved out, New Orleans became more violent. The author went on to point out that the Mafia did not put up with any non-professional BS because they did not want any attention.
Think about it...they were in control of drugs and gambling and offered "protection" as well. The killings and punishment were strictly business related and most times, the dead guy deserved it.
Maybe we can ask the Mafia to come back?

quote:whats funny is when these gangs got shipped to Houston during Katrina, they though they were going to have a good ole time in new territory. Turns out Texas doesnt let them get away with stuff like Louisiana does and they moved back with the quickness after NOLA dried out.
Mostly neighborhood groups, the national gangs have tired to move in on more than one occasion and the locals have always pushed them out. It's a different breed in New Orleans.

People say there are no Crips and Bloods locally, yet all the big name rappers are affiliated one way or the other.

You're right about Chicago. The leaders of the 6-7 gangs that ruled the city got arrested ave the power struggle kicked off the violence they have now.

The gangs get the drugs from the Migos.
I swear, I could join NOPD for one day, sit at The Lowe's on Elysian and make 2-3 large drug busts and a 100 small ones.
It's an odd system.

We will see more violence as Central City is Gentrified.
I think we should have relocated ALL public housing to Algiers, The East, Florida area, and left the 7th,8th and 9th alone.
Y'all can have the 7th ward and upper 9th.
But these gangsters they don't own property.
They should be easy to uproot.
