I know why he left. The "got tired of dealing with the assholes" is the closest explanation but it seems to be one a-hole in particular that got to him.

Yes, but when he was pumping it, bitcoin was well over $1000 and he confidently predicted it would go to over $5000. Sorta like the occasional rush of gold bugs that pop up.

So long as there's a need for the ability to conduct illicit transactions it'll be around though. BTW some of those might the sort of thing you and I would find perfectly legit, for example people trying to skirt capital controls imposed by an oppressive government.

Oh crap so it's still very valuable. Thanks I feel stupid again.

there have been major heists. computer break ins and hacks that make off with huge hauls. impossible to track.

don't feel stupid. its a bad investment because you cannot trace it. the same qualities that make it interesting for criminals make it a dumb move for ordinary citizens.

Not entirely true. You won't get anything stolen if you protect it properly. Would you walk around town with 10 grand in your wallet? That is the problem with bitcoin in it's current form though. The learning curve on how to protect and use it is still a little too complicated for the average person.

I used to work with him. He bought a ton of fake weed before it became illegal and later he got busted selling it on the dark web about when Silk Road went down

He said it would go to $10,000 and topple governments or some shite. So it promptly went down to like $300 and he hauled arse. It's a shitty form of payment, it's a shitty form of "money" and it's a shitty investment.

ETA: and he said everybody would be accepting bitcoin. To date, I've not seen one fricking legit store that ever accepted bitcoin.

The shady-arse links he used to send trying to convince us that bitcoin was "widely accepted" were hilarious.

I refuse to let myself get sucked into arguing this. I wasted too much time 3 years ago.

On the other hand with normal currency if I put it in a bank and that bank is compromised (no form of security is ever 100%), I have numerous regulatory bodies that will help protect me against the loss. It's also more likely the thief will be caught and at least some portion of my money may come back.

If my bitcoin gets stolen good frickig luck to me.

Also bitcoin is easily subject to manipulation such as when one holder can easily move the price with a few transactions.

I thought Wiki disappeared when Bitcoin was hacked and plummeted because he didn't want to face all the "I told you so" assholes around here.

To it's credit, Bitcoin has rebounded quite well and is still an accepted currency.
