What? Johnny WON the bet and therefore kept his soul AND got the devil's golden fiddle.

Had he lost, he would have been out a soul.

You are thinking like Johnny. He lost his soul the second he took the bet out of pride, hubris, and vanity. The devil didn't need to play a note to win his soul at that point. Johnny could regain his soul before he died but it would require him to give up the fiddle with no compensation and atone for all the sins he committed by owning the fiddle.

Johnny's only play to keep his soul that day was to walk away, Johnny underestimated the devil's craftiness.

That was your dignity you sacrificed, sir. Your soul is still intact.

Unless she was on top, flat souls are worthless.

This is pretty apt,

When you're dealing with the devil,
To win their ain't no way,
So if you want to save your soul from hell,
Your best bet's not to play.

"Down to the Crossroads", which is the intersection of Highways 61 and 49, just east of Clarksdale, Mississippi,

1. My grandfather was born in Cleveland Ms and his father worked for the railroad during this time. Even though he was only 9-10 he remembers hearing the story shortly after it got started (it took a little while to filter through the African American community and into the white community). According to my grandfather Robert Johnson and the other blues players like him did not have cars and busses had not become regular things in the Ms Delta at the time Robert Johnson is alleged to have sold his soul to the Devil. At the time, Robert Johnson and the other blues players of the day used to hop on the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad between Vicksburg and Memphis and hop on and off to play at juke joints in the Ms Delta. Rosedale was 1 stop south of Friar's Point/Cleveland. The train used to pass through Rosedale just before midnight and stop. The abandoned railroad ROW where the train station would have been located is less than 2000 feet from the crossroads of Ms Hwy1 & Ms Hwy8. Robert Johnson would have had time to walk to the crossroads sell his soul to the Devil, and walk back to the train then ride to the train north to Friar's Point/Cleveland to play at a juke joint in Cleveland that night. The train did not arrive in Friar's Point/Cleveland until after midnight. Since Robert Johnson was supposed to be traveling back to Cleveland from Hazlehurst MS Hwy 1 & Ms Hwy 8 crossroads makes more sense than the crossroads of US 61 and US 49 it would make it impossible for Robert Johnson to sell his soul to the Devil at midnight in Cleveland if his train did not arrive until after midnight.

2. The crossroads in Cleveland is the Blues Crossroads not because that is where Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil, but because it where the bus stop on the major north-south and east-west lines that ran through the Ms Delta converged. In the 40s and 50s Blues artists used to hang around and play at a African-American owned juke joint just across the street while they waited on their bus.

I would say, Be careful, lest you find yourself "At the Crossroads".

I have been to both the Crossroads in Cleveland and Rosedale at midnight and I did not meet the Devil. So I don’t buy it, but I do believe CoachO sold his soul before the 2019 season.

I thought the song was about betting on yourself even if the ante was high.

Someone should write a song about Johnny's life after the fiddle contest

Johnny you rosin up that bow and saw that fiddle gold,
Yeah you're the best there ever was but Satan's got your soul,
You're sinnin' while you're winnin', and you just can't get away,
So clever did the devil make his playyyyyyy...

Arguably, Rodney Mullen is the grandfather of street skating.

He invented a bag of tricks from the future.

I always believed his alien level skill set was his gift from the devil for his soul.

Brother, not sure why you got so many downvotes. I definitely think there is some merit to what you stated.

It's a metaphor for sacrificing your morals for material wealth.

If you have no morals then you're good to go though.

Can confirm. Addiction usually leads to someone seeing out God…. I associate selling the soul with making unholy sacrifices for the gain of money, fame, etc…
