quote:

According to the philosophy of Peter Wessel Zapffe, humans are a biological paradox. Consciousness has become overevolved in humans, therefore making us incapable of functioning normally like other animals - cognition gives us more than we can carry. We want to live, and yet because of how we have evolved, we are the only species aware that it is destined to die. We are able to analyze the past for broad expectations of the future, both our situation and situations of others; we expect justice and meaning in a world where neither occur. This ensures that the lives of conscious individuals are tragic. We have desires and spiritual needs which reality is unable to satisfy, and our species still exists because we limit our awareness of what that reality actually entails. Human existence amounts to a tangled network of defense mechanisms, which can be observed both individually and socially, in our everyday behavior patterns. According to Zapffe, humanity should cease this self-deception, and in consequence, passively end its existence by living out the lives already created but actively abstain from procreation, thus ceasing to create new lives

I disagree with this. I would rather experience pain than experience nothing.

I've always said that I would rather die and live an eternity in the hell described by the Bible, than die and lose my consciousness.

Damn.
Pessimistic much?
We live a wonderfully weird existence. But damn. No need to go all apocalyptic.

I was agreeing with most of it until it said we should just give up on life.

Hard to disagree with his analysis but we still have the same biological drive to live and reproduce that other animals have.

Yes,.. but.. although his premise is against bearing children, he fails to include bearing a child, as a variable in ones happiness during their life.

He is claiming that this is superfluous to our survival. I think that it is supplementary. Both of these have contributed to our success as an intelligent and social species.

To his conclusion, I find value in striving for the unattainable. It is something that can never be reached, but progress can be made towards it all the same. With in the context of that struggle I have found joy and fulfilment despite the pain. Is it not right that o should want other consiousnesses to experience the beauty that is brought with that pain?

Although I will admit that in my darker times I have thought that it may have been a great punishment to have been born to experience such anxiety and pain as is inherent in life. I wonder what inspired my parents to do it to me. Clearly it is a thought that I am not alone in struggling against. At this time I do think that it is worthwhile.

I have experienced great lows, including the death of my closest family members. After each time of low, the spikes of joy gradually come back with a vengence. I love the times of joy too much to give them up due to pain.
