I find the people that say shite like "clear 150/year" to NEVER be full of poo poo.

WTF do you people do to make that kind of change in your 20s?

P.S. I was just razzin' you with the hunting camp jibe. I know none of us here are real ballers no matter how much we wish we were.
I dont wish Im anything more than I am, and I'm no real baller. Im comfortable but would never claim to be a baller.

I didn't coin the term "capitalist class". That's a textbook definition used for people of that level of affluence. "capitalist class" does not equal entrepreneur. I understand that the use of that textbook term may have been confusing due to its misleading name. You are very correct about much of the "capitalist" class actually getting their money from trust funds and inheritance. I'm sorry the term is misleading.

Of good, glad we got that out of the way

Agreed. I get this on a small scale from my SO's family. Their family has historically been very involved in politics, law, and once owned, or still does, this and that in whatever place. I come from Old Lack-of-Money in St. Amant. Everyone knows us since we've been a part of the community since before it was a community, and everyone knows that we've never had much. My dad's the most successful member his family's had since they came to this country in the 1860s, but we're still just middle class on a random Louisiana backroad in a podunk Louisiana rural area that doesn't even have a town, but I love it that way. My SO has really had to coach me up a lot for rubbing elbows with higher society than those that dress in jeans, cowboy hats, and steel toes to "Jambalaya" weddings.
My exs family tried so hard to fit in with the uptown crowd. It was such a fricking joke.

I couldn't imagine making that in my twenties. I am mid-forties and didn't make that until the past 5 years.
One variable that hasn't been mentioned are careers that don't initially pay well but have incredible pensions. That long term security is often underrated by the young and ignorant.

One of the things I love about my dad is how little he tries to fit in.

His job has him frequently rubbing elbows with muckity-mucks, but he's the same with them as he is with his high school friends. It can get embarrassing, though when he's around my SO's family because he can come across as a hick despite his high level of education, but I respect him for being true to himself. He won't change for no one and nobody. My mom puts her foot in her mouth waaaaay too much, though

What exactly does "clear" $150k a year mean? After taxes? If so, how many exemptions are you taking and are you paying a huge lump sum to the IRS every April?

Good for him I guess. Those positions are few and far between though.

My father could careless about how much you make and who your daddy is. I'm the same way. I remember my father telling me it wasn't going to work because we're not from Uptown and we didn't go to Newman then Tulane or some track like that. Fake it till you make it I guess...
I'm not even from here so I couldn't give a flying frick if you're an uptown stunna. Bleedat

I'd do it too if my SO let me get away with it and my boots were in decent enough shape (I have to ditch the cowboy hat on account of them making me look like a Jewish used car salesmen).
However, higher society is much more judgmental of dress, words, and actions. When I'm with her, she expects me to maintain a higher standard. When I'm out with a construction crew in a plant, though, I'm my trashy, swearin' self.

He works like 6 days a week. I would hate myself.

That's what I took it to mean. That's a serious chunk of change.

My college roommate is an investment banker in NYC. He didn't start making serious money for a few years and only after he went back for his MBA.

That is relative to where you live. 250k in Miami is pretty normal![]()
I know Old Money will probably never see this, and I don't know if anyone else called him out on it, but...

In 2009, the median income for a household in the city was $29,812, and the median income for a family was $33,814. The per capita income for the city was $19,846. About 21.7% of families and 26.3% of the population were below the poverty line.

per capita is 19k, but 14x that is also normal

Family income of ~$100k marks the entry point - the upper limit is arguable.
