It's just another way of saying they don't want to be in a relationship with that person. It's the same as "it's not you it's me" or "I think we just work better as friends". There is nothing wrong with women or men breaking up with someone and being independent and focusing on themselves for a while. People have a tendency to lose their identity in relationships and feel stifled. Some people need to be alone for a while to figure things out,remember who they are, and decide who they want to be. There's nothing wrong with that as long as they're honest about it and don't have kids.

If they have kids, they're just being selfish.

If they're being dishonest, it means that they're likely already f&%king someone else who's more interesting, likely a musician, artist, or yoga instructor.
