There isn't a simple "fix" out there. It's a combination of several factors that contribute to shin splints. First start with the correct shoes. For this you need to get fitted by someone who knows orthotics. Your stride and or form is probably contributing to this as well.

I found relief by using a heating pad on my legs right before running and ice right after running. After doing this about a dozen times, my legs felt fresh as a daisy

Rest, and change shoes. I had a pair of Nike cleats in high school, got shin splints. Switched to some sweet all-black Pony's, shin splints went away.

Motion control shoes might help in the long term. Brooks Beast is my shoe of choice but there are others. There is not short term quick fix that I know of.

It's not ideal, but I find if I run on a treadmill with at least a 2.0 incline, I don't get them.

Not to be a wet blanket, but if you have to jump through all these weird hoops to perform an activity without getting shin splints, then it's likely that the activity isn't for you. Sure, you can spend the next few years trying everything (and resting 2 months every other fricken time it doesn't work) on the off chance you find a solution, or..... realize there is no solution. You're fricked.

Took me too long to realize it for myself. My feet point outward naturally like a fricking penguin - no way I can run regularly without causing a bunch of trouble for my joints.

There are other kinds of exercise though - I recommend that. Most ppl aren't built to be able to jog; that takes a big toll on your body especially if it's done on pavement.

double amputation is the only answer.

That being said, you probably have a combination of bad shoes, stiff (c)ankles, and weak calf muscles. I use to get them. Changed to a shoe that fit (I pronate) and started working the front part of my calves into the routine and now I can run 3 miles with no pain.

That isnt always the case though. I ran track and cross country in high school and never got them. Once I got to college I did. The reasoning was that we were hardly ever running on concrete in my hs days. If your legs are used to a certain surface and you change they might happen. I just had to slowly work up to running on concrete and they havent bothered me since.

Try picking up a pencil with your toes. It's a good stretch. I also drank a ton of coconut water to help the leg cramps/shin splints when I was pregnant. It's filled with potassium.

Stretch your calves. Ibuprofen, and find some shoes that work for you. Try walking around your house on your heels for a few minutes a day as well.

Any voodoo tricks you guys know about?

I know when I was in high school and I would go from playing football to the start of basketball practice I would get shin splits the first couple weeks. I would put tape around my leg just above the calf and below the knee to help with the pain. It would help and the shin splints would go away after a week or so. This was the late 80's, so I'm sure there are newer ways now, but that is how we did it then and it worked.

I used to get them a lot. I have a buddy who is a Dr and this is what he told me to help me and it worked. Sit with one leg folded under you and have your toes pointing straight behind you. Reach down and grab your knee and pull up on it stretching the muscles on the front of your shin. Then switch legs and do the same thing to the other. A couple days later I never got another one.

Elliptical machine.

It's not the type of injury that you can run through and it will toughen up. It will only lead to actual fractures of your shin bone.

Elliptical is low impact and does the best job of emulating the physical benefits of running.

Usually if you allow them to heal, you can avoid them going forward with a combination of mixing up your workout with low impact exercises and running more on soft surfaces like grass.

NO CONCRETE
