It’s certainly there to show off wealth but I like the design of it and the the look of this thin massive tower rising from the flatness of the desert. I also thing it fits in well with the other surrounding buildings and by and large Dubai has a nice cohesive style unto itself.

I find the Burj Khalifa quite pleasing... makes me wonder how the rival tower in Saudi is coming along.
As for the question, most modernist or brutalist Western skyscrapers are boring at best if not hideous. Just plain boxes with no attempt at style or substance.
