Show respect and courtesy and you'll likely get the same in return. It's gotten me out of many tickets.

Disagree. Especially when you get pulled over for BS. They are looking to cause trouble in those instances.

Well, I haven't had that experience so I can't speak to that. But, I also don't have a chip on my shoulder re: LEO's so I can control myself during an interaction with them.

There is no 75 limit in Louisiana

A huge stretch of I-49 north of Ville Platte is 75mph.

I got pulled over on I10 in AZ for the stated reason that my CA license plate "looked fake". But as long as we're pulled over he wanted to search my car.

1. 16 yrs old speeding - got a warning (he knew my family and was polite but reminded me of the cost of a ticket.)

2. Pulled over for getting to close to the double yellow on a country back road. Accused me of drinking, found out I hadn't been, gave me a no POI since my proof was expired and I forgot to change it out. Cop was a douche but I remained respectful. Ticket dropped after I showed the judge I had insurance.

3. Speed trap in middle of nowhere hit me doing 55 in a 45 right at the speed limit sign outside of town. Got a ticket. He was a prick but a nice one. Ticket $150

4. Said my tags were expired. They weren't so he wrote me a seatbelt ticket. Didn't have it on so it was warranted but he pulled me over for a false reason. Ticket was $96

5. Pulled over for no seat belt in a crack house infected town. Guess he figured I would pay the ticket unlike the majority of the model citizens in that town. Ticket $100

How these things sometimes work is that they push their way into your vehicle. For example when I got pulled over, and the police told me to get out of the truck, the cop stood in the way of me closing the door then just started rooting through my truck. I'm thinking the idea is that he is going for implicit consent. At that point sure I could assert my rights and tell him that I don't want my vehicle searched, but I run the risk of pissing him off. Then he might start looking for reasons to fabricate to arrest or charge me. It's a crappy situation.

You understand the definition of the word "limit", right? You exceeded it and got a ticket. Why did you get mad?

Yeah, because every cop ever pulls over every single person who exceeds the speed limit by even 1 mph. What an ignorant comment.

Of course. Just saying that showing respect doesn't "likely" lead to a good experience depending on the situation. If you're a middle class or upper class white person who looks the part, then that probably works. If you're poor white, or maybe appear like you may be, or minority then you might very well have different results. If you're black and especially poor and black, you're going to have the worst experience. Just my opinion.

Yeah, I feel lucky that hasn't happened to me. I would certainly try and stop them if it did happen, but you have to be careful. In my case he threatened to get a warrant and keep me until he could get one. I called him on it and he let me go.

They then made me go into their mobile home with the breathalyzer and forced me to take one even though I refused and said I hadn't been drinking. At that point, I became the a-hole. I was stripped of my rights.

So what did you blow ?

Stopped 3 times, ticketed 3 times. Was respectful and courteous, didn't matter. Didn't get tazed though.

Two were deserved.

The third I was going 50 in a 45 on the way out of town. Was stopped literally 30 yards short of the 55 sign. Cop said that I should stop traveling at "excessively dangerous rates of speed".

Twice.

Falsely accused of a DWi. I refused to do a field test because of a recent leg injury. They brought me in and my test results were negative.

Going down a one way (the correct way) in a school zone. You weren't supposed to use the street during school traffic zone hours. I had permission from the school board. I tried explaining this to the cop (very politely and calm) but he wouldn't listen. He threatened to bring me to jail which made my kids start to cry and freak out. Proceeded to the school and he followed me. I went to the principals office and told her what was going on. She went outside and asked him to leave. He tried to confront me in the parking lot, but I quickly got in my truck and left. No one was in the parking lot and if I wouldn't have left soon, he would have beaten the shite out of me and arrested me. Went to court, talked to the DA before going up against the judge. DA told me the cop had been fired for many other harassment situations. Charges dropped.

Edit: both times I was in Louisiana and the cops were black and I'm white.

Well, then he violated your 4th amendment rights. If you're uncomfortable speaking up at that time. You should absolutely file a complaint or pursue other action against the officer.

Getting pulled over isn't supposed to be a pleasant experience. Being respectful means it doesn't get unnecessarily ugly.

To your point about race/class, the unfortunate reality is that, statistically, those people are much more likely to commit crimes, so I can't really fault cops for being more suspicious of those people. It's simply a combination of statistics and human nature. If upper class whites are the ones committing the most crimes, then they'll be profiled more. It's no different than the middle class white kids driving through the hood at night. Cops always assume they're looking for drugs.

Never have been, I don't get why people would risk being pulled over by going 20 over when cops won't even think of pulling you for 10 over while traffic is moving at that.

That certainly plays into it but so does the fact that police know those people are unlikely to be able to fund a defense. Public defenders are a joke.

Eta I'm referring to class not race.
