Hybrid bikes are much cheaper than a traditional road bike.
I mostly only ride on bike paths (there are a ton of them where I live at). Don't trust sharing a busy road with cars.

I've never really priced hybrid bikes, but you can get a road bike pretty cheap (~500 is cheap compared to the high end I guess). I personally think the road handle bars are much more comfortable if you spend a lot of time on the bike. You have 3 different positions to put your hands so your arms don't get tired. If you are just cruising for 30 minutes or so, and it's obviously cheaper for the hybrid, I'd get that though.
