Point being, if it's so important to your community, your community should receive no federal money.

This wasn't your original point.

If it was, I would have agreed with you.

But this is where you should have started your argument.

Big federal funding increases for libraries

The following message is from ALA President Jim Neal:

We are thrilled that Congress has passed an FY2018 omnibus spending bill today that includes significant federal funding increases for our nation’s libraries!

One year ago, the White House proposed eliminating the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and slashed millions of dollars in federal funding for libraries. Twelve months and tireless advocacy efforts later, ALA advocates have helped libraries

Public libraries are a great resource. Free internet. Free printing. You can borrow books and audio books from the overdrive app. They have a great movie selection. Also, they are just a good general community center where numerous community activities and education takes place.

Went last week. Checked out ten books of house plans. Beats the hell out of buying them to flip through once.

Public libraries are a very much needed service.

I don't see mention of federal funding in there anywhere. Do you?

Thanks.

Although I feel compelled to note that that vast majority of the funding is for school libraries, not public libraries.

If my community is so unimportant to the federal government then the federal government shouldn't receive my community's money.

I get a new book to read every month. The EBR library system is one of the better ones I've ever seen. Just about any book I want, assuming it didn't get released within a few months, I can find. They also have a huge movie selection too. I like the library.

Are you being obtuse or did you not click the link to my previous post? This is, of course, after your telling me that I didn't mention the problem with federally funded libraries.

Libraries are unnecessary and a waste of tax dollars.

Because you didn't.

No. I just noticed your subtle shift in your argument when you realized your original take wasn't very good.

I noticed your sudden interest in nuance when you realized you had no idea what you were talking about.

Are you just pretending that you weren't about to take me down a path where we argue "original points," and the semantics of "tax dollars" and "government funding" vs "federal funding?"

Go ahead and agree with me like you said you would so we can move on, please.

I didn't read through the whole thread...there is an anti-library crowd?

Of all the garbage tax dollars get spent on...we should probably agree libraries are a net positive, right?

...this thread actually reminded me I haven't been to the library in a minute...maybe I'll do that soon.

Well yeah. But if I didn't know what I was talking about, I wouldn't really be able to discuss these things, would I?

I'll agree with your point that libraries should be supported by local tax dollars.

I do not agree, however, with your original point that they are a waste of taxpayer money and should be shut down.

You didn't know what you were talking about and yet you tried. So you tell me.

My point was that they should receive no federal funding.

If they need federal funding they should be shut down. I don't want to pay for hobos to sleep in libraries. Even if it's $2/year.
