I have been smoke-free since May 2018.

In the past, I smoked primarily:

Winston Lights
Camel Lights/Blue
Pall Mall Lights/Blue

What inspired you to start?

I've always thought it would be interesting to send a 40 to 50 year old adult in a tobacco store, maybe with hidden camera, and say, "I've never smoked, but it looks cool and seems like something I might enjoy. Could you recommend a good brand for a beginner?"

I should try some old lady cigarettes like Virginia slims. I would think you don’t smoke that many years and smoke bad cigarettes.

My mom and dad were hard core, so Tareyton for them. Of course, they both died from cancer related to smoking, so I don't smoke.

Marlboro only can in four varieties back in the day: red (box or soft pack), menthol (green), 100's (gold), and lights. Now I see about twenty.

Are Winston cigarettes still around?

Here's a good reason to quit... At $6.00 a pack: $6 Daily = $42 a week = $168 monthly = $2,016 yearly! That's money just burned away...

Try $9.00 a pack/day, which is about what is was for me when I quit cigarettes Feb. 2017. Added up to over $3,200 a year.

My brand was Benson & Hedges Ultra Light (later renamed Deluxe) Menthol. "Johnny Carson cigarettes", as my friend called them. I was very particular about that brand. Once I ran out while tailgating for an LSU football game, and while walking to the kick-off I dragged my friend all over around the campus perimeter to find my brand; we may have even missed kick-off because of it. I can remember on several occasions driving to 5-6 places in small towns like Hammond, Picayune, etc. trying to find my brand when I ran out while on the road, and eventually calling places to see if they had my brand. The worst was when we were on vacation at the Paradise Lodge on Mt. Rainier and I ran out. I had to take a 40 minute drive down to a small town at the base of the mountain; no one had my brand and I had to settle for Marlboro Menthol Lights. I didn't even finish that pack; when we left the National Park for good and got back to civilization, at the earliest opportunity I bought a pack of my regular brand and threw the temporary fix away.

Smoked about a pack a week until Katrina; stress from that eventually led me to a pack a day. Doc told me-- didn't advise me, but told me-- to quit and signed me up for Chantix, the patch and and a smoking cessation program. Finished off the pack I had and just quit cigarettes; not weaned off gradually or anything. Was tough at first (especially on long drives), but glad I did it.

Still smoke the occasional cigar, though.
