I knew a guy while I was in college that had a small chain of fireworks stands. I don't know how many, would guess 6-8 or so. He worked New Years, Independence Day and a trip or two to China to meet with suppliers. Took rest of the year off. Claimed he was clearing $250K and this was back in the mid 80s.

She has now in grocery management and we never would have thought it pays what it does before she started.

Well many of us worked in restaurants and grocery stores in HS and realized then that the GMs of McDonald's made 60k a year and Albertsons made 90k. This was 1993.

What outrages more Than surprises is what city and various public administrator positions pay for the work they (don't) do.

Plant operators

I've told that story here before. I was an analyst in a plant and my first project was to develop a management report showing all hourly employees who grossed over 100k for the year 2001.
Of the ~700 emps, 500 or so were hourly and 126 of them made the list.
I made 52k at the time with ISDS and Finance degrees. I was pissed for a week.

That reminds me of another anecdote. A friend of mine's son went to work at Publix while he was in college, then dropped out of school completely when get promoted to Deli manager at $70k. This was a early 20's year old kid. I think I remember him telling us that he'd move around a bit to move up to assistant and then general store manager but hit close to $300k in a bigger size market.

Manager at Kinko's back in the 90s.
Salary wasn't great but 10% of the store profit brought salary over 100k

one kinko's location PROFITS over a million dollars? even in dallas or NY, that seems odd

Yep and I am pretty sure Albertsons in BR GMs get about half that. I guess people are really shocked by what grocery store managers make and do.
It's a lot of responsibility from managing people to supply chain management, marketing decisions, public relations/customer service. Everything.
