What allows certain game shows to thrive longterm?

Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!, and Price is Right have been around decades. No changes to the games and always consistent viewers. Then, game shows come out that are heavy drama. Sky high ratings early and then just die. Why is that?
Millionaire was always my favorite but I stopped watching when Regis left the show. That has dropped off worldwide.

The only reason Millionaire didn't last as long as the others is because of the night time slot. The others could last another 100 years because, well what else is there to watch during a week day?

Wheel of Fortune comes on at 6:30-7. Why is it able to survive? I agree about the others.

Genial host, easy enough game so the average Joe can play along at home. Everybody wins something. In all the shows you mention, its hard for a contestant to completely bust out.

The hosts are popular. Price is Right's ratings have gone down since Bob Barker left and the show has changed a good bit.

It's 5:30 for me. Still before anything good comes on. And also, the contestants regular people just like any of us so we can relate to them, make fun of their looks, call them stupid... and we love that shite.

Wheel of fortune had a lot of changes. Anyone remember when you had to spend the money in the room full of stuff? And you didn't get spotted the RSTLE.

Both WOF and Jeopardy move pretty fast. Wheel caters to the average person and Jeopardy caters to the intellectual/pseudo-intellectual.
Millionaire just moved too slow, and the whole "you got the wrong answer/sike/you were right" schtick gets old.

I loved the 500 questions game but couldn't stand how long it took them to play it. After every question it was some long drawn out story.
