We have enough assets to fight battles here and abroad...and win on both fronts. And fighting battles here would mean that the enemies would have to get here somehow, which isn’t gonna happen.

They would have to invade and occupy the US?

It would take most of the world, especially Mexico and Canada because a naval invasion would be futile. You'd probably have to have 90% of the countries with a significant military to do it.

Our biggest fear should be non nuclear EMPs and serious hacking to infrastructure and satellites.

Think about it, with our navy we could put a blockade on pretty much the entire world.

Add in the new rail gun cruisers

The railgun project got scrapped. This is like the Navy version of the hover tank from Sgt Bilko.

Why would the US want to invade any other country?

Exactly. I get this is an exercise in the hypotheticals, but honestly, we are good over here. I give a damn about acquiring/occupying more land.

Vietnam seemed to do pretty well with Russian and Chinese backing.

The main reason for territorial expansion is money. It why Russia invaded Crimea, they need to get control over the eastern Mediterranean trade routes now while their military is as big as it is. In 50 years the red army will be half its size.

we are a long way from those days, and that was a halfed-arse effort that ended for political reasons not because we were defeated.

It'll be a lot easier to occupy the US once the democrats have taken everyone's guns away.

With 2 oceans to cross and conventional arms being used. No one would make it here. We have more Aircraft carriers than the entire world combined. Not to mention the most silent subs know to man. Add in the new rail gun cruisers if they get rolled out in time and its a massacre in blue water.

Not to mention that, other than the US, five of our closest allies are in the top ten in military budgets, 7 of the top 12. France, the UK, Japan, South Korea and Germany are top 10 and Italy and Australia are 11th and 12th, respectively, in spending.

Japan really just has a defense force, but France, the UK, South Korea and Germany have military technology that is as good as anything that Russia or China have.
