As somebody who lives in Portland, all of these responses about how awful Portland and Seattle are make me laugh. Complete generalizations just because people here aren't as outgoing like they are in the South.

Rudest city I've ever been too was Boston.
Funny that you say that. If you aren't an inconsiderate or overly intrusive tourist, I've found most Bostonians to be quite garrulous.
I honestly have mixed feelings about people in the South. I think a lot are fickle and disingenuous to all.

Yeah, it's a real eye-opener to be sure. It's not just a big city thing, either. I'm familiar with cities making people colder. But the PNW twins are different entirely. It's like everything in the world is just a big "meh" to them and nothing could motivate them to care about anything at all - not doing a good job, not being friendly, not looking after themselves. It's kind of amazing after visiting there how any of the skyscrapers got built, or the roads paved, or anything really... because they don't seem motivated to do anything but just kind of sit alone and write a depressing diary entry or something like that. Was there once an enterprising, energetic generation there that has all died off?
This is one of the most bizarre things I've read on a website full of lunatics.

I haven't interacted with many in the northwest, but I have had many great conversations with people in the northeast. In my experience, the stereotype of the rude people out there has been anything but true.

i've had nothing but pleasant experiences with all the people i've met in the pacific northwest. One of the most gorgeous parts of this country!

Same experience with downtown Seattle. Several of us sat at a bar for lunch one day and the bartender said that she could tell that we were from the south because we made eye contact with her. She was from Texas and said that when she first moved there she said "bless you" when a lady sneezed and the woman glared at her like she had killed her dog.

Yea, it was called the Seattle Chill when I was there but it is real. They don't try to get to know you and intentionally try to shut you out. Like others have said, most are nice just some aren't.
Seattle Freeze Wiki
quote:
The Seattle Freeze refers to a belief that it is especially difficult to make new friends (particularly for transplants from other cities) in the city of Seattle, Washington. According to KUOW radio, a 2005 Seattle Times article was the oldest reference to the term found.[1][2]
quote:
It has been speculated that the origin of the phenomenon stems from the reserved personalities of the city's early Nordic[11] and Japanese immigrants.[12] Other reasons might include the emotional effects of the climate or the region's history of independent-minded pioneers.[12][13][14]

I'm walking into a building downtown and notice a woman with kids behind me and it's raining .
It hasn't rained here in 70 something days. Why wait so long to post this?

The rest of the year is pretty good also, average annual rainfall in Seattle is 37", average annual rainfall in Baton Rouge 67"
Most misunderstood weather related bullshite ever. Seattle isnt referenced in conjunction with rain in various ways because it receives a high rainfall total. It gets its reputation because its rains for half the number of days in the year. It rains ALL the fricking time but its rainfall total stays in the national average because its mostly a light drizzle.
In the Gulf South we get far more sunny days, even sunny days with rain, but when it rains it fricking pours. Louisiana receives the highest total rainfall of any State in the nation and South Louisiana is the rainiest(by total volume) region in the lower 48. I think something like 8 of the top 25 rainiest cities(pop > ~30k) in the country are in South Louisiana.

Now we don't make eye contact.

Theres a reason most polls of the "happiest people in the country" end up having cities in the South at the top. Humans are social creatures and unless youre on the spectrum social interaction should make you feel warm and fuzzy inside like a lost, cold, hungry hunter in the woods who just stumbled across a tribe of naked jungle foxes.

It's the degree of social interaction that is in question. Not everyone has the same needs or desires socially.

It has been a while since the last made up southern hospitality story

I lived there for 2 years and have made my opinion of the PNW known.

Which is weird because according to you, you barely left Seattle.

I hated Seattle. I loved the surrounding area though. I liked how good skiing or fishing was nearby. I didn't have that much of a problem with Portland either compared to Seattle.

Well, I'm not a big fan of Seattle either but it's not fair to pretend the entire PNW is like there.

Have you ever been to a big international city outside of the south? There's a reason "southern charm" is a thing.
